across country and back in a spyder
We are planning a 4500 mile trip in the 981 spyder, it will take 12 days and we will go (without too many details and all the sights along the way)
from
Ohio
- DesMoines
- Rapid City
- Yellowstone
- Salt Lake City
- Mesa Verde
- Kansas City
- Ohio
If people can do it on a bike, I can do it in a Spyder.
What amazing road trips have you done in a Porsche?

I bought my cayman in DC and drove it back to Arizona. Was a great trip. Its hard to shift your body around in the cockpit vs bigger cars but it was still great.
The only negative was when parked at a gas station and some teenage/20s losers were throwing coins at my car while getting gas and talking to an enthusiast. None really hit the car but still pretty low. Anyway, whatever i have better things to do than confront them or make a scene as they were trolling for a reaction. Had one hit the car it would have been a different story.

If your going from Salt Lake to Mesa Verde, you might want to consider going to Bryce Canyon first, then take 12 to Boulder UT, eat at Hell's Backbone Grill & stay at Boulder Mountain Lodge, it's on the same property and has a great hot tub. Then take 12 north to 24 east to 95 south, just make sure to plan your gas stops.
Mesa Verde is great, but has steep ladders and drop offs.

Thanks but we did vegas-zion-bryce-north rim- south rim - hover dam - vegas back in 2014.
The reason to drop from salt lake to mesa verde is to pick up arches and canyonlands...

at 52 I am no where near the shape I was in 10 years ago. back then I was an avid marathon runner (24 fulls and Boston twice)... but I want to get some of these bucket list trips in before I get too old. The whole reason for buying this car was to use it and take some epic road trips.

Lived in the 4 corners area for 10 years, never got tired of seeing the beautiful scenery.

My entire reason for buying it was that NA 3.8.
but this reason is why I bought the spyder and I sold my 914-6.
I would have loved to use that car for long trips but it was too rough on this old guy, super stiff suspension, no heat, no air, no heated seats, no defogger, louder than tolerable, etc.

Bought my '05 987S in Dallas, drove it home to Chicago that same day. Easy trip, top down the whole way, even at night and in light rain. Solo trip, that. Stupid grin on my face the whole way. This car continues to delight me and that 900 mile drive was just the overture to the show.
Wife and I drove to Porsche Parade in Vermont last summer. Awesome trip, total about 2400 miles. However, driving top down all day at ultra highway speeds gets tiresome, as does that much direct time in the sun. We would pick our spots for open air, balance of time it was chat, tunes, podcasts with top up.
Up through Canada, both out and back, with overnight stays in Kingston ON and Toronto ON... then 5 nights in Jay Peak Vermont. Rockin' good trip with awesome day drives through that beautiful area.
Car is plenty roomy. We had two 22" roll-aboards plus extra jackets, shoes, and other provisions. Brought our own car cleaning supplies and such as well. No issues on storage. Do bring one of those U-shaped flight pillows. Whoever is napping can't recline and will find it very helpful.
If your Spyder has lumbar, bingo! I just move it around from time-to-time and it makes all the difference in the world. No back pain whatsoever. Else, may wish to have small suitable cushions to achieve roughly the same effect.
Check the speed with a GPS app on your phone too. If you're like me and like to set a very specific speed on the highway, you'll find the Porsche speedo is off just about 1.5 mph at highway speeds. YMMV.
Have a blast!

This is how my wife and I went to the Porsche Parade in Monterey and perhaps will be doing the same for the Parade this year in Spokane . We are both well over 70, I have a chronic bad back and the car has sport bucket seats, which by the way are the best for my back. We had a great trip but not sure you want to watch two seniors climb out
