981 Spyder ECU recall for reflash
#16
People often confuse recalls with TSBs (technical service bulletins). Recalls are only required with potentially life endangering issues. All others are TSBs. Never heard of an ECU recall in my life, so most likely a TSB.

Yeah, its not likely going to be listed as a recall, just something that will be updated the next time you take your car in.
Audi recently did this to my S4 to change the sensitivity of how the ECU declares cat malfunctions. Apparently there were many ECUs throwing codes saying the cats were bad when they werent, so Audi changed the parameters. It was just a flash updated whenever you brought the car in for a normal service. There was no notice given to owners, just told it was done after the service.

My brother's 2015 BGTS has 2 pending TSBs: An DME (ECU) one related to PDK, and another for the instrument clusted related to TPMS pressures when in comfort setting (it's working perfectly). My 2016 Cayman GTS doesn't have any open campaigns. I can feel PDK is a bit jerkier when releasing the brake and creeping, and when it shifts from 2 to 1 in manual/sport mode. Mine changes to 1st at around 1K rpm, and my brother's car like at 600, so below idle (idle in sport is 800), therefore a little jerky. It feels identical otherwise, so I imagine that's the reason for the TSB. I guess Porsche just about perfected PDK programming in 2016. It's just plain awesome on my car.
Since all Spyders are manual, it's obviously something different. And being the 3.8 from the 911 CS, maybe it's something affecting those cars as well. Haven't heard anything on the GT4 though, and they share the same engine and tune. Curious what the deal is. Somebody post when it's clear what the issue is. But generally, TSBs are not something that is urgent to fix at all. Just something that next visit is quietly updated. Or unless you're having an annoying issue, and want to take it in before the next service.

Okay, found the notice it's a "Recall alert." It states:
"RECALL DETAILS
Recall Date: Nov 20, 2015
Manufacturer Recall/Service Bulletin Issued
NHTSA# Recall# Status (These fields are blank)
Voluntary Service Action - Re-program DME control unit."
Labeled as a "Recall," but I agree it looks more like a TSB AND it's "voluntary". I haven't had any joy getting my SA for the last two days, so no idea what they'll say.
Still find it odd no one else received same/similar notice.

Campaign WG20 - Driver's Manual Supplement
I took my Spyder into the dealer for an oil change last week. I was told there was an open campaign for a supplement to the Owner's Manual. They said they had to order it and would call me when it came in. I picked it up today. It's entitled "Boxster Spyder - Engaging convertible-top fins." It's a 29-page + manual in multiple languages, but the instructions are just one page. The page basically describes things to look for to ensure the flaps are secured properly, noting "The vehicle may sustain damage if the convertible-top fins are engaged incorrectly and are detached when driving."
I suspect enough Spyder owners have incurred body damage from improperly secured flaps that Porsche felt compelled to incur the expense of making this supplement to the Owner's Manual and initiating an open campaign. When you guys take your cars in for service next time you will probably be notified of this supplement.
The part number for this supplement to the Owners Manual is WKD-981-800-16.
The campaign number is WG20.
Other than this, there were no other service bulletins, "recalls," or other campaigns identified for my Spyder.

Not sure who would be buying since Porsche provides the supplement free to Spyder owners.
