For me personally, I don't understand this mod. It is purely cosemetic. In fact you are adding weight... as it's a factory existing hood wrapped in CF... wouldn't a vinyl wrap would be lighter than this? The 997 GT2 RS hood you mentioned in the ad was actually made of CF not wrapped.... saving you weight. This is the complete opposite. http://www.suncoastparts.com/product/GT2RSHOOD.html

I'm sure the craftsmanship is great and it looks beautiful. That might be enough for some.

Good luck with the sale.

After rethinking this, I might have been a little harsh. I just do not understand why people take a material designed to be a performance advantage by being a lightweight substitute for metal then using it for the complete opposite. Wouldn't be the first time though, as Porsche does it as well (decorative trim for example). Ignore my verbal vomit, not everything need to be performance oriented.

No worries, thank you for the follow-up to your original reply! Both my friend and I realize that this modification was purely cosmetic...But as you've noted, there is certainly a market for both functional and cosmetic mods amongst Porsche owners. I do realize the 997 GT2 RS and 991 GT3 RS have "true"/100% carbon fiber hoods, and hope my original post was not in any way misleading. Just trying to draw a visual comparison, that's all. It is a beautiful piece, and will surely complement someone's car quite well.

...With that in mind, I must say some matte carbon would look awfully nice with Sport Classic Gray, especially a Spyder!

Best,
-Greg

As someone who has been "wrapping" for over 6 years, I find this post most interesting. While I don't know the cost of an OEM 981 hood, I do know the cost of 25 square feet of CF wrap, and the reasonable compensation for the skill and labor to apply it. As an economist by training, I also know that the price of something can often exceed the cost of that thing--in fact if this were not the case neo-classical economics and the foundation of capitalism would not have existed and flourished.
But let me assure you the material cost is unlikely to exceed $100, as all "CF wrap" products are vinyl by nature, and while they vary in quality, among the best is 3M 1080 wrap, which would cost at most $120 for the quantity required to wrap a 981 hood (something I have actually done.)
Let's be generous and assume the cost of the OEM hood is $2000. This makes the material cost $2100. The labor cost to apply the wrap is unlikely to exceed $200 at $100 per hour, a handsome return for this effort. So now we are at $2300 in cost. If the asking price was originally $5000 that represents a markup of $2700. There may be shipping costs to offset, but still there is considerable margin to be exploited.
Just wanted to provide some background if it could be of value to anyone.

I don't think this hood is a vinyl wrap... it is literally wrapped in carbon fiber with a resin finish... thus the higher price.
