Question 987.1 Boxster S 3.2 hesitation & slow gear change.

Hi All,

My 2006 Boxster S 3.2 Tiptronic is presenting the following conditions & i was hoping some of you more experienced or anyone who has had similar issues could weight in with the below;

Scenario 1)
When approaching the on ramp onto the freeway in 5th gear doing approx 60kph and then flooring the car, the 2nd gear light indicator on the dash is lit up almost instantly then there is a slight delay when the car actually gears down into 2nd gear and then another delay til when the car actually begins to pull hard.

So from the dash indicating 2nd gear to car pulling hard is probably a 2 second delay, this cant be normal right? (all the above is done in auto mode)

Scenario 2)
After going around a corner (sometimes) or when applying 40% throttle the car will shudder/jerk hesitate when shifting from 4th>5th sometimes from 3rd>4th. The shudder/jerking motion isnt very intense but is definitely felt & feels like there is hesitation in acceleration.

My thoughts are either some sort of bush or transmission mount, perhaps air flow meter or transmission slip?

Additional information;
-However when flooring the car from a complete standstill there is no jerking or shuddering just a nice and steady pull all the way to redline.
-The trans filter and oil change was done 2-3 months ago 3.5 liters was changed and done by a Porsche specialist.
-Car has EVOMs air filter, stock exhaust but decat headers

Any information on the above would be greatly appreciated as if we suspect its a transmission about to fail i think it would be time to resell the vehicle and purchase another.

Regards,
R

Is it possible to take a video showing the tach and speedo while driving? Frankly, your description matches the expected behavior from the Tiptronic transmission. The design of an older conventional automatic is just slow to react and change gear, like when doing the 5->2 kickdown you speak about. The secondary delay once the gear engages is the torque intervention from the transmission controller ceasing and allowing the engine to deliver full requested power.

Are these new symptoms, or have they consistently been present for some time? Have you had the car scanned for codes in the engine or transmission? Sometimes an engine fault can put the transmission into a limp mode that slows gear shifts and also makes them harsher (because the engine and transmission are not coordinating the shift as they normally would). Start there. Fluid level that is too high or too low can do this as well, but I would suspect that would have changed this behavior after the fluid service was done.

Hi EVOMS,
Thanks for your reply.

I have just gotten the car back from Weltmeister and the stuttering has improved (2x oil changes down on transmission). However the kick down delay is still present, i think the delay has always been there but it is only recently that its been this slow to kick down.

The car has been scanned but nothing to report.. perhaps they only scanned the engine and not the transmission?

Regards,
RP.
