Default 981.2 GTS - 4 or 6 cyl???

Since it is (almost) impossible to get an allocation for a 2016 Cayman GTS here where I live I wanted to check if someone on Rennlist has some info, other than what's already out on the net:

Will the 2017 Cayman GTS also have 4 pot turbos or will they carry on with the 6 cyl NA engine into 2017 model year (981.2)?

There is some conflicting info, CAR magazine states in August that the 981.2 will be 4cyl turbo only, with the GTS a 4 cyl 2.5l 370hp engine.

Then my dealer tells me the GTS will keep the 6 cyl into MY 2017 "for a while" and wants me to stay calm...

This because they can't give me an definite allocation until end October and the thing is: I have found one at another dealer, >800km away, that has an allocation for a 6cyl 2016 model.

But a 6cyl NA engine, 2017 model would be nice, with the updates that now are presented on the 991.2...

Anyone...?

Default 981.2 GTS - 4 or 6 cyl???

All logic and information available points to 4 cyl for the boxster.. The 6 cyl ends with the gt4 and Spyder

Agreed. Looks like all boxsters/cayman will be 4cyl turbo after this model year, with the GT4 likely maintaining NA.

And the Cayman GTS model may not be offered right away so you would be looking at a Cayman S with the new motor only for the first year(s)?

GTS models have always been a minor bump from the S models. Knowing that the base and S model is going to 4 cylinder turbo, the GTS is pretty much a given too at a later date. more than likely a year down the road.

My guess:
-981.2 Base and S Turbo 4 = 2017MY
-981.2 GTS Turbo 4 = 2018MY
-981.2 GT4/Spyder NA 6 = 2019MY
-982 Base and S = 2020MY?

Makes sense - all of the above. So GTS production is more or less stopped now, until the 981.2 GTS is presented and production started - late next year perhaps.

Question is if they're going to build a few more 981.1 GTS:es or can the production run really be completely sold out already...?

I have a 15 gts and it is fantastic, and a LARGE part of why is the sound. It is much slower than my prior car (GTR) but the soundtrack drew me to it. My recommendation is travel to get one if you have to. I am sure that the turbo 4s will be great cars, and better performers, but I fear that the sounds will not be the same. I have fun driving within the speed limit in my GTS and just letting the exhaust pop and crackle.

One can expect the switchover to 4 cylinder turbo to start production around June 2016 (same timeframe as the cutover from MY2016-MY2017).

Chances are they will ramp down MY2016 Flat6 models up until that time. Look at past sales figures to see how they ramp down prior models.

If you want a Flat6 version - jump on it now, especially if you want a GTS. Allocations are scarce.

Hard to say if they may offer a Flat4/Turbo GTS flavor right away.

I can pass on what I've heard- dealers were recently told that the 981s are staying 6 cylinder. My impression is that the change will be to a 6 cylinder turbo when that time comes, not a 4 as we all believe.

Since we know 4s have been tested extensively, my guess would be that either the costs, sound or customer perception vetoed the 4 cylinder move, at least for the short term. I know this runs counter to what's out there currently, and I can't vouch for the authenticity, but I am sure a number of dealers have been told the 981 is staying a 6 for now...

Definitely 4-cyl... Walter Rohrl exposed more about new gens here:

https://grrc.goodwood.com/road/news/...v4iBdc5ZYFe.97

‘We need to go to turbocharging to reduce emissions,’ he is quoted as saying. ‘How else can we get C02 levels below 95g? But no matter how good a turbo engine is, it can never have the pure response of a naturally aspirated engine.’

Walter Röhrl doesn’t stop there. ‘At least it’s not a four-cylinder turbo like in the next Boxster. That sounds like a Volkswagen Beetle, I’m not kidding you! I tell the guys, “You’re joking with this sound, right?” But they just say they are working on it. I’m sure they will get it right.’

Hmmmm, I have a hard time believing that Porsche, less than one year ahead of planned production start, would cancel a completely new engine program, in which they have probably invested >100 M€ in development, tools and production equipment, just because dealers are responding negatively....

Not that I would mind at all, but I just don't see it happening...

That's from February. I spoke with him in February and he complained about the 4 cylinder noise then. However clearly a lot has changed since: the new Carrera isn't a 2.7L, for example. What I posted above is from late August, and it indicates the 4 cylinder has been rethought at least in the short term, so I think the timing is uncertain.

I also asked about the 981 GTS at the Spyder launch, asking if it was still a useful point of comparison given that it hadn't been announced for the 2016 model year. I was told it wasn't going away just yet. I can't say if that's true, but that's what I was told by those that would know...

That is very interesting and no-one would be happier than I if it could somehow be confirmed. I am a little bit surprised that Porsche is being so secretive (?) with what is happening next year - it's not like like they will kill sales of the current model when/if the 4-pots are announced - quite the contrary...
