Continental (VDO) Radio Install 1992 968
My 1992 968 came new with the basic CR-1 with no other audio options or modifications. It died. Rebuilt CR-1s are expensive and one is stuck with 1990s tech even if it was rebuilt. I started to search for a non-bling bluetooth capable receiver. My search ended with the Continental/VDO TR7412UB-OR. It looks period correct, and is not a bunch of flashy lights. Basic. Less is more.
The Continental receiver does not come with a harness. I ordered a basic ISO (VDO labeling) harness. It was not plug and play in my 1992. As these cars are starting to become somewhat valuable(keeping that CR-1 and its code!), I did not want to hack the harness. There is an adaptor that you can adapt the ISO to the factory harness so it is plug and play. You can get it from Crutchfield as Metra 70-1822.
Once the harness was made, it was smooth sailing. The only hangups were that you had to swap pins for the Ignition and Constant power. I tapped into the clock backlight for the dimmer on the radio (orange wire). It works great with my phone for streaming, bluetooth calls and radio reception is excellent. Now the weak link is my 25 year old speakers. Very happy with the purchase. I'm all in for $153.
The display is not that bright to the human eye. My phone likes to use light anywhere it can get it.

That definitely has a great look. Do you know if Bluetooth produces a better quality sound then RF? Or is it pretty much the same? I had an RF unit added to my CD-2 and allows me to play the ipod through the radio. The CD broke long ago. radio still looks good though and it cost $1,347 in 1992 dollars If I was to go aftermarket I would give that Conti a try.

Jeff,
Bluetooth works great! Handsfree calling works well, too. Radio reception is excellent! I found stations that I didn't know existed, both on AM and FM. You can also use a thumbdrive. The only downside is that it doesn't have pre-outs for an amp. Probably could be overcome, but that is not my forté.

tore at bergvillFX has the adapter to use the continental radio to the stock harness.

if you have a BEA, the white, yellow, brown and blue wires coming off the fader are 'equalized' but haven't been through the final output stage. much cleaner.
