Ac questions.
What type of compressor do we have and where is the expansion valve??
I'm seeing Jensen compressors on eBay for $330 dollars does anyone know if they are good quality?
Is expansion valve difficult to replace?

The A/C compressor has a clutch. This will start to make the noise that you are describing when it starts to go south.

944's tended to have more AC issues simply because they produced so many of them and they had many owners.
68K on a compressor is 'young' provided the system was maintained properly, the biggest issue is recharging and not adding oil to the system, lack of oil toasts a compressor.
The noise you described could be anything or normal. When the AC is not on, clutch is not engaged, noise could be simple belt noise. If things get loud it could be worn pulley bearing. When the system is on the compressor does make some noise. Things you have to listen for a 'grinding', clapping. knocking.
If you want you could remove what ever refrigerant is in the system. Take the compressor off and disassemble it, inspecting: pistons, bores, wobble plate and reed valves. If all looks good then just toss in a compressor seal kit.

Thank you. I have driven enough Porsches where I think this noise is probably not normal. The thing that I am worried about is the compressor chewing itself up then I have a bunch of metal in the system I would have to clean out. So I thought perhaps just go ahead and put a new one in along with a new expansion valve since the car is almost 25.

Drifting
did you pull the low side r12 shrader?
googling, it looks like the blower box at the windshield cowl needs to come off to access the expansion valve. (the 93 up lid is about 65 bucks if you need cabin filters where you live.)
