Default 968 Sport Down On Power

Hi all,

Recently bought my second 968, a 1994 968 Sport in Guards Red... It's absolutely great!

However, one thing I noticed straight away is it's massively down on power compared to how I remember my old Comfort being. Both have been chipped but the difference in power is huge!

I cannot feel the VarioCam working after 1500rpm... I wondered whether it could be the piston is not actuating?

The cars done 165,000 miles and has full, comprehensive service history. Otherwise it runs and drives great!

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated, I don't like being burned off by Ford Fiestas!

Christian

After a long 600 mile trip!

It's possible the Variocam is not functioning correctly, there is a procedure in the 968 FSM to test the solenoid. Far more probable though is the camshafts are not timed correctly. Every time the tensioner pads are replaced the cams must be retimed, or at least confirmed. Since the car is new to you, do you have records detailing when the tensioner pads were replaced?

Another possibility is that you could be off by a tooth on the cam pulley. Most cars have not had the variocam tensioner pad service performed but in case that was done, it could be the likely culprit.

Other than a visual inspection and timing checks of the cams/tensioners, is the solenoid the only 'outside' test there is? Will a quickk dyno check confirm the cam/tensioner suspicions?

Do the RoW cars have the self diagnostics as the US specs? Hold down the go pedal and see if any codes are stored. An 'iffy' hall sensor can retard the timing resulting in weak performance.

A new cap, rotor, plugs and wires can improve drivability....as well as fuel and air filters. Any indication in the paperwork?

The cam actuation is very definitive in the upper rev band...not so much at the lower threshold.

Hi, Did you get to the bottom of this? I am in the same position (also previously had a CS, now have a Sport), had the belts and camchain done when I bought it but it doesn't perform how I remember the old one used to

I would start by confirming all your ignition components and fueling are in good shape. Next, check if your timing belt's timing is correct. One tooth off and all of a sudden you feel like you are down 50hp. Make sure you either use a dial gauge to get tdc or the flywheel marks.

Since these components were mentioned...........I am planning on replacing cap and rotor and plug wires.
Should I buy oem plug wires or are there better ones?

I always try sticking with oem because they were designed for the vehicle.
Another possibility is due to the exhaust cam pulley's adjustability, it could be off. This would require factory method of setting can timing.
Start with simple things that are overdue. Run some Techron through as well. And foremost, drive it hard.
