Default Hard start and rough idle when cold

Hi All -

I just picked up a 92 968 with 80K miles (coupe 6psd) and noted it has a very hard cold start. I have driven these cars before and had my share of 944s and 951s and never had this before. When the car is started from a cold it will sometimes stall immediately after a prolonged turning over. If do give it some gas I can keep it going. If I give it some gas it will stay started but will slowly go from 800RPM to 1200RPM or there abouts.

It sounds like it is surging. I did search on here and came to the conclusion it could be the DME, coolant temp plug, or some other gas line valve which I was new to me.

Once it's warm or driving along the car seems fine. I have ordered a new DME and Temp plug as contenders. I might as well have those anyway on hand since this is not my only porsche. Any other thoughts?

My very good porsche mechanic looked it over when he changed the timing belt and water pump last week and just thought it was old gas. He could not find any other leaks or air issues he said. The car was sitting for a while before I got her so its possible it is the gas. I have since emptied and refilled the tank with not a lot of improvement.

Thank you in advance.

Thomas - Fuel is drained and new stuff is in. As I said its slightly better. The second part of your message does not apply...the car is not throwing a code.

Toureg- Black coupe, lots of options

any of the electronics would show up holding the pedal down. are you getting code 1500?

see if your cap and wires are in good shape and that you have good fuel pressure if temp sensor doesn't cure it.

Sounds like a bad vacuum leak.

My mechanic said he looked for that and could not find a leak. I will check out more when I get the DME replaced and coolant temp plug....

Basics, basics basics. Get it running, idling, to the extent you can and then shut it off and check the plugs. Are they black? Wet with gas?
