996 Tiptronic Steering wheel controls in 968?
I know there are probably only a handful of people who have put a 996 airbag wheel in their cars...but wondering if anyone has wired up the tiptronic controls to work with the tiptronic system in the 968? It doesn't seem like it would be too difficult to wire into the manual shift controls and adjust to the right resistance input - the only thing that would concern me is the computer getting an input for an up/downshift from the steering wheel when the shifter is not over in the manual section.
I found one thread of someone putting in and using the tiptronic controls for their stereo, but that doesn't have anything to do with this.
I loved the paddle shifters on our previous Mini Cooper S enough that when we got our A4 wagon, I swapped in an S4 steering wheel with paddles and use them often.
I don't have a tip car, but it might be enough to make me consider one for a daily...

It all depends how the tiptronic steering wheel controls work. If it's a simple switch with up/down and it transmits this over the clock spring...it would be easy. But it's most likely not like this. It most likely has a small controller in the steering wheel that converts the shifter switch to a digital signal and transmits this over one wire across the clock spring.
This would then be the input to a control module, which would then have a +12 VDC input to the transmission control unit, just like the shifter.
I created a procedure for the Audi A8, in which you would retrofit a face lift steering wheel to a pre-facelift car....just as you describe. In that case, it was the first scenario (multiple wires that just wire in to the control circuit), I've also changed steering wheels on later cars, and they use a digital input.
If somebody has the wiring diagram for the tiptronic steering wheel, I could tell you if you could do it or not.
Here is the procedure:

It's actually a pretty simple four wire circuit. I have a 968 tip car and a 996 tip steering wheel on hand, but haven't put it on mine yet. Don Istook and I discussed doing this a while back, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

I like these tiptronic buttons on the steering wheel also.
How did you connect the steering wheel, used a 996 clock spring and did it fit without modifications?
Edit: found Paul Waterloo's topic about this.
Started with the wiring, now looking for a steering wheel like you used.

Just bought a steering wheel like yours (from a 996 Carera 2001) and made the wiring from the Tiptronic switches.
Now waiting for the steer to be delivered. Hope it will fit.
