Default Odometer and trip quit

Subject is 1994 968 coupe with 80,029 + a few files on it.
My odometer quit along with the trip meter. Speedo and tach are fine.

I see other posts about the odo gear--does that failure affect both the odo
and trip? Does the sender from the transmission also take out the speedo if
it is kaput? I'm trying to rule out other causes before tearing into the dash.
Assuming I need a new gear, does the procedure on clarks-garage work for the 968 (other than the airbag)?

I'm apparently cursed in the odometer department since this is the third car I've had in the last 25 years with odo issues. Since I'm honest, it's now a "TMU" true mileage unknown title, knocking any semblance of resale value right down the toidy. One of them was a 1988 924S so I'm familiar with the gear replacement on an early dash car.

thanks
Jon

Hi Jon, You have the infamous Odometer Gear problem. Remember to be Super Careful removing the Speedometer Needle so it does not break the stem. The plastic dash parts are brittle from age and heat.

Good advice Larry.

Also, this generally happens from resetting the trip odo while the car is moving. I try to avoid doing that now.

1) Yup, aware of that and I never ever pushed the reset while moving. I even keep that practice on my all electronic Audi A4.
2) I thought I read that was no longer an issue--only plagued the early more mechanical models.

Jon, still annoyed at the thing

You have to be sure which gear to buy. Count the teeth in the gear now in your car so you can order the right one. The 968 takes a different gear than the 944. Pelican Parts has a chart.

Resetting the trip computer while the car is moving DOES NOT cause the failure. Its the last straw. Since swapping my original odometer gear for a new one, I have had no issues resetting it while moving.
There is no need to remove the needle for the gear swap. Everything can be done from the backside of the cluster.

Repairs complete, works again after an exemplary vendor experience with the guys at odometergears.com.
Ordered at 7:30am, order confirmation received 9:30am, USPS shipping tracking info 1:30pm, correct parts arrived when promised. Why can't everyone do business like that?

Thanks for the links to instructions. The clarks garage one is good for removing the instruments and the docwilen one shows the speedo repair well. There is no need to remove the speedo needle; the gear is accessible from the side.

Finished the odometer repair this morning. Also replaced the 3 dash lights with 3.4 watt bulbs. Fairly straight forward job just take your time and don't force anything.

Also, as per Jeff at Odometer gears it does not matter if you are moving or not when resetting. The oem gears break down as a result of the lube that was put on them and at some point they just fail.
