Default Rebuilding a 968 engine

I'm just getting started with a complete rebuild and thought that I would share pics and comments as I go. Below you have a 1994 968 block that is about to get new main bearings. More photos tomorrow.

After cooking breakfast for the family I managed to get down into the garage to work on the engine. Inserted new main seals, added assembly lube and put the crank back in and torqued it down. Then I pulled two heads off the shelf and am in the process or cleaning them up. Will likely take one to have new valve shaft seals installed and cleaned up.

Happy to do it. Sitting here putting my shopping list together; even as a diy this stuff is expensive. Sitting here trying to decide if if is worthwhile to do the balance shaft bearings or not.

I have to do rod bearings in my 968 motor this winter, so I'll be looking out for those pics especially!
It'll be my first time doing internal engine work, so knowing that more people can diy these is helpful.

Tim, make sure the front surface where the oil pump bolts up it perfectly flat, in regards to the crank bridge and the block, or it will leak. This comes from experience Also, do the balance shaft bearings, they are cheap enough and you are already there

Yea, read that in the service manual and it took a few good wacks with a rubber mallet to get it seated properly.

Some of them line up perfectly first time and some need some "coaxing". Have fun with the rebuild it is definitely a good experience

I thought the girdle-to-block mating surfaces were supposed to get loctite 574, not assembly lube, is that incorrect?

That was not in the workshop manual and when removed there was no indication of a sealant between the girdle and block. However, before I move on, I better do some more investigating. Clearly the oil pump gets loctite 574.

Made arrangements to get the valves cleaned up and reseated. They will also check to see if it needs to be decked. I hope to have time this week to get the head to the shop. All parts should arrive tomorrow, I guess you could call this an early holiday present
