Default Engine Oil Choice

After a rather long period of time, finally sorted the issues with the engine running lean and it will be on a plane getting back to me by early next week!!!

Did a search on the forum and seemed to find quite a few people using Mobil 1 15w50 or Mobil V-Twin 20w50.

Wanted to hear what people are using for their engines and their thoughts? I heard Castrol was one of the other popular oils being used.

Anyone has thoughts on Porsche Classic Oil? Not sure how much of a premium that is over here but will check.

Turbos run hot so you want to use a synthetic oil.
I like Mobil1 V-twin because it has a lot of ZDDP in it. It only comes in 20W50.

No air cooled 911 should use M1 0W40 unless in Antarctic.

No air cooled
Turbo should ever run 0W40 even in Antartica. That is suicide.
Full synthetic only.
I can't believe a Porsche Dealer does not read factory requirements.
Mobil 1 15-50 or vtwin as metal Guru suggests will work just fine. I think Motul makes a similar oil. Brad Penn is ok, but for non turbos.

No to Brad Penn.
Semi-synthetic oil that doesn't perform well in our engines. I was using it and didn't like what it left behind in my engine. Others have had a similar experience.

Metal Guru, so you would go with Mobil 1 V-twin 20/50 for both Turbo 3.6? Also, how about the 3.3 in the 930 (specifically I have a 1987). TIA.

OK, I'll take your word for it, but I had several friends that run it in their modified 993 Turbos, without issue. Major DE guys. But, they changed it after every event, too.

I think any full synthetic with the proper amount of ZDDP will work. The important thing is using the correct viscosity range to match typical ambient temperatures where you live.
Specifically I use the V-Twin 20/50 in my car and so far I'm happy with it.

Silly question but is there a chart to compare against ambient temperature? Its like between 27'C and 35'C over here and around 18'C to 20'C in the highlands (where we go for some twisties)

Check your owners manual. It's in there.

Would anyone know if Mobil Special is the same as V Twin. The specs don't include the zinc rating...
http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_Special.aspx

Appears to be references for 4 stroke bikes or automobiles / light trucks though and different from the V Twin. https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us...ecs-guide.ashx

Looks like they call them different things in different countries.

I may need to get mine imported from Singapore.

This appears to be what is marketed in the US,

https://mobiloil.com/~/media/amer/us...ecs-guide.ashx

I've been using Mobile 1 V-twin , 3 oil changes in almost 10 k miles on my new motor . I have sent samples in to be analysed and so far so good . The lab said I could go much longer between oil changes.
metal particulates have stabilized after break-in .
