US import restriction:
So you can not import cars from the EU into the US that are either new and via official dealer network, or older then 25 years old ?
@ RSVP911: Not sure what happened. Getting more PM's that all come in well.

Thanks a lot Flachbau. Will read into it.
Guess the rules are only for road registration and not for Cup cars because I have just bought a 964 Cup that was imported in the US in 2007.

Regarding importation into the US, am I to understand that unless it was originally sold in the US, one must wait 25 years to import? What about original NA cars, does this also apply to those? Thanks in advance guys.

- non road cars can be imported as race cars - they can never be registered for road use
- any road car can be imported after 25 years without DOT or EPA conformation - there is no restriction on their use
- road cars on the eligibility list can be imported A) under 21 years w/ EPA/DOT conformation or B) 21-25 years w/ EPA conformation only - there is no restriction on their use
- road cars NOT on the eligibility list MAYBE can be imported under show and display - show and display has no DOT conformation requirement but cars must have EPA conformation - there are annual mileage limits for their use
- there is technically no grandfathering of show and display to the 25 year exemption - it is forever show and display
- there is a list of cars that are already eligible for show and display as someone else has already successfully received approval to import one under that exemption - other cars require a petition
- U.S. customs uses the calendar year for determining a cars age because manufacturers model years are not consistent

Mark, nicely said...thank you. With strong dollar we may see cars coming this way?
I imported a German 3.0CSL around 10 years ago which was exempt from both EPA and DOT requirements. No problem getting it into the country. But I had a difficult time registering it in my state of CO. I did not have the "right" forms, and or they were in German. Thus I gave up and titled it in my primary home state of IL. My point: also check your state laws or you may not be able to get title.

So it doesn't make a difference if the car was originally sold in North America or not, say Canada? The 21 or 25 year rule still applies? I assumed all cars that were sold to NA had the same EPA and DOT equipment installed, but maybe not.
Where can I find the exemption list? Is a 3.3 liter Turbo on this exemption list?

- if the car was originally a US car it can be imported back into the US at any time
- if the car was not originally sold in the US and built to US DOT and EPA standards you need to wait 25 years
- a 3.3 turbo is definitely not in the show and display list
- if the car was originally delivered and manufactured for Canada, then the 25 year rule applies

Thank You all, and yes I found the Fed site and discovered that up to 21 years it must meet US EPA, so this box is now checked but it must also meet DOT up to 25 years, which it likely doesn't based on door beams, ODO in KM's and a few other bits. 25 years it is. Cheers
