The faster the set off the stronger the smell from ventalation system?
I have checked around tank area seems ok so i think its coming from
engine bay!

Could be that you have an exhaust leak inside your heat exchangers.

I think it'd be unlikely that you'd get gas smells from the headers. The headers would be exhaust smell.

I'd check around the gas tank, filler hose, make sure the gas cap doesn't leak, and be sure not to overfill when you're filling up (I've found splashing a bit of gas around can result in fumes for longer than you'd expect).

Dear Spencer,
I suspect you have a leak in your fuel distribution system on the engine. It is a CIS so you have many possible areas to leak.
Fuel smells after refilling are ormally caused by;
a) Bad fuel cap gasket or
b) A cracked fuel filler pipe which is a know 964 problem area.

So come on lads all out to the garage to sniff your fillers!

I do admit I do notice a slight amount of vapor eminating from the charcoal filter area. Nothing very strong but it does exist. It is only noticeable when the trunk lid is open. I did not think much about it. How strong a smell are you noticing?

If you are describing fuel odor, there was a Porsche Technical Bulletin related to the fuel filler neck. Here's the details
http://www.porsche964.co.uk/technical/fuel.htm

As someone else mentioned, it could also be a leaking fuel cap. Start with the easiest solutions and work your way up

My independant garage said the charcoal filter was favorite, on inspection it hasnt got one is this right on 3.3 turbo? filler neck & cap next
also i have now had air bag reset 3x not cheap every other week, the hammer shows no fault whats going on?
And finally i left my car in the care of a reputable valet parking company at manchester airport, 1 week later returned to be told they had scraped it down nearside, GUTTED. To be fare they paid up by return of estimates but be warned.

This thread started me thinking about the slight fuel odour smell I have in my trunk. It never bothered me until I left a jacket in the trunk for several days. When I removed it it just smelled of gasoline. I inspected everything and could find no evidance of leakage anywhere.

I decided to order up the filler neck as noted since it appeared to be a simple replacement. I spent 20 mins yesterday removing the neck and to my dismay the unit had already been updated to the .06 version.

Now I am left with 2 issues. The first being, I have a gasoline odour that builds over time that I would like to clear up but see no reason for it to be occuring, the second is I have a brand new special order gas filler neck part number 964.201.043.06 that I cannot return.

If anyone has interest let me know I paid $145.00 + shipping I would like to get what i paid for it. If you have interest let me know. I am going to post this on the 964 board since the part is interchangeable. Part is new never installed.

I am going to work on this over the weekend. I replaced the part, but still have fumes - even after the car sitting for 3 days

Hi all
since my last post i have now replaced fuel cap, filler pipe & the rubber type flexi pipes from the heat exchangers as advised by my specialist garage.
However the odour is still there as soon as the engine is under boost from the heater vents.
Last night i put her in my garage for the night then 10 mins later i had to go out again, when i opend the garage door the petrol fumes had filled the whole area.
When i tried to start her she was not on all cylinders for a few seconds then ok,is this the same problem getting worse,i hope so then maybe i can track it down. b.t.w next morning no smell & started fine.So now i seem to have fumes thru the vents on boost & after driving from the right side of engine(very strong)
HELP
Spencer

Spencer,

Are you smelling Gasoline or unburned exhaust odours under full load. I think they may be 2 different issues.

I get the unburned fuel/exhaust odour and have spoken to several very knowledgeable people about it and they say it is the nature of the beast.

I am also getting a smell of Gasoline in the front storage compartment around the filler pipe. I went to replace the unit with the newer style filler pipe only to find out it was already updated. I do not have a clue what could be causing this. I plan on attempting to pressurize the tank under low pressure and see if I have any leaks, tank, hoses etc.

If you find out anything first please let us know.
