air bag control unit light is on
#2
Does your mechanic have a Bosch Hammer tool or Durametric too to scan for the error code? I used a Durametric tool to diagnose my airbag light issue. My error code indicated code 49, a break in the ignition Pill circuit 1. The fault was a bad connection between the clock spring and airbag module. I cleaned the connector contacts by mating and demating the connector a few times. I cleared the fault using the Durametric tool. Airbag system now operates normally (Airbag light goes out after the 1st 5 seconds after ignition turn-on.)

Did your mechanic give you a specific trouble code for the airbag? Without going into specifics it's easy for him to say you need to drop that much coin to fix. Like toms930 said, with a Hammer or Durametric you can see the exact issue and go from there - likely for far, far less than $4000.

+1 - Learn what the fault codes are. I've had intermittent airbag faults over the years. Some were cleared by cleaning the crash sensor connectors. Others were cleared by replacing the clock. The Airbag circuitry goes through the clock and they have been known to have solder joints fail over time. Some folks here have successfully, taken their clocks apart and resoldered them.

The failures of the computer modules themselves unless they got wet isn't very common. (airbag, abs, DME, CCU, spoiler). It's usually a sensor or something adjacent to the system.
