Default Poor leakdown #'s question

when I bought my 91 964 the leak down numbers were pretty bad. I haven't had the money to do a full top end rebuild yet. How much power am i losing by having poor leak down numbers? Will it be a noticeable difference after the rebuild?

Easy way to find out is to put it on a Dynojet. Compare it to other owners with similar mods.

Too many variables to make an accurate guess otherwise.

Another perspective - How does it feel by the seat-of-the-pants? Does it have good throttle response, rev smoothly to red line, etc.??

How much power are you losing, impossible to tell without a dyno session.
Will you notice a difference after a rebuild with previous poor leak down, yes most definitely.

One good reason to get it fixed sooner rather than later is if it's a broken piston ring or rings causing the problem, this could scratch the cylinder bores causing a more expensive rebuild.

Sounds as though you're expecting a rebuild though so no doubt budgeted for that during the purchase.

Seat of the pants feels fine. Pulls pretty good in all gears. But... i have nothing to compare it to . Nobody around here has one to test out ( Nashville).
Yes, i got a good deal knowing it needed a rebuild in the future. A rebuild about $20k??

You should just sell it to me for $30k. Be rid of that poor thing. I'll take good care of it. ;-)

What are "really bad" leak down numbers?

People on Porsche chat love leak downs of 5% or so...or less.

On a Chevy, 15% is just fine...

On trucks? More...

Does the car drive well? Then just enjoy it.

if you don't miss the power and it's not burning too much oil or making weird noises just deal with it.
people who have driven or in my car comment on the power, it's fast, rebuild 5k miles ago.

What were the #'s? My 89 had ~5% max leakdown when I bought it and well, it's super strong too for those who have driven it.

I would find out where leaking is happening - some leaks are more serious than others as they can lead more expensive problems if ignored, how many miles on motor.

My friend had leak down numbers approaching 15 percent. You could tell it was lacking in power, but not too bad.

Anybody know why the picture is not showing up? I do it the same way always used to do it on photo bucket copying and pasting the IMG link. Now for some reason it doesn't show the picture? What am I doing wrong?
