A really dumb question only I can answer
Hello, its been a while since I have posted or visited here, but I come back with a quandary.
I have a slate grey '91 C2. I have had this car for about 4 years, and it has primarily been a track and autocross car. Last season I got my NASA provisional race license. Now I really want a race prepped car, I also really want that car to be a 911. My temptation is to rip the interior out of my 964, weld in a Rothsport cage and go racing, but...
With the rising values of all air cooled 911s, and so many parts for 964s becoming NLA, I wonder if that would be a good, or really bad decision.
So, as much as I know this is something I have to decide for myself, my question to this group of enthusiasts that I respect is this:
Is a 120k mile, very used C2 with a lot of track modifications (DAS rollbar, RS door panels, no A/C, harsh suspension, tons o' rock chips, etc) a car that is desirable enough to a 964 aficionado that I shouldn't take it past the point of no return to a fully race prepped car?
Thank you for your opinions.

Full-Race Track Car or BAN!
And anyway, with a good pedigree it will probably go up in value. Worst case scenario you could sell it as a hull/donor to Singer or RWB they don't fuss too much about the miles because they'll go through the whole thing.
And slate grey? Probably one of the (arguably) best colors Porsche ever made. I would love to see it built to the hilt.

He didn't sell but the market told him what it's worth.

Race Car
Judging by how kids feel about cars today...we are all dinosaurs. Our cars are future worthless bricks. So if you are thinking of an old crappy 911 as something of real long term value...therapy is in order.
But if you are thinking of your old crappy 911 as a new lease on life and an avenue for fun...get out there and take advantage. You only have one shot at life. Don't blow it.

Besides, lots of the folks who own and race these cars are aging out of the hobby.

Keep having fun with the car you know already. Advance the car, as you advance as a driver. The Black Beauty Jack Olsen RSR way!

Sell me your car :-)
I think when you want to race, the class you will race in is important as part of the decision. Is there class for these 964 cars?
Personally, i think they are fantastic track and street cars, but, if i were doing new race it would be a boxster, cayman, or if air cooled spec 911. Those have big classes here and very competitive racing.
P.S. I took a very clean 100% original 964 and f'd it all up with track mods. Welded cage going in soon.
:-)
WHO GIVES 2 CRAPS ABOUT VALUES!?!??!

If your going to go for it weld in a proper cage. I don't believe that the Rothsport cage meets the criteria. You might want to look into it first.
I disagree with others if you like it as a street car once you go down this path it will no longer be streetable. Then you will find yourself spending too much for a second 964. I would return it to stock and buy something already built. I returned my C2 back to stockish condition after tracking it for years with just 61k miles on the odo I am happy I did. I was lucky enough to find a donor 90 C4 for $10k and built what I wanted but I could have had some very nicely setup GT3's for the same price.
Just a tease but building one is a lot of fun but then do you want to worry about crashing it which you know can easily happen.
