Hi, I have a feeling that the above post by porsche mania may have just hit the nail on the head.
If the noise started fairly suddenly there's a good chance that one of the rocker shafts has worked loose and maybe come free at one end, this makes the shaft only supported at one side, that was what happened to mine and it sounded similar to yours for the very short time (5 mins) before the rocker seized then was snapped in half (probably seized valve open then piston hit valve and pushed it closed snapping rocker)
Good news is that if you don't run it any more until it's inspected if that's your problem the costs to repair it won't be too expensive, new rocker shaft and some labour costs would probably be fine.
Whatever, don't run it any more until the valve covers are off, when they are your problem will more than likely be obvious, first thing to look for is the position of all of the rocker shafts, it'll be easy to see if one has walked loose.

I had a #6 pop out on me. Sounded just like this. Hopefully this is the case and all you need is a reinstall or insert(for destroyed threads)...did you hear a loud pop before the noise started?

No, I was inside as the car warmed so didn't hear a loud pop. The other thing that makes me
Think it is valve related was a week before last time I drove the car I had a profound valve tick. Figured it was also just a little cold and oil starved. It went away quickly. It's been cold and had other life crisis the last weekend, but I will take a look in the coming days and report what I find

Omg! Like a giddy teenager I discovered it was a valve adjusting nut after all!! Sitting in valve cover. Yes!!!!!!! I literally yelled in joy. It was a sight to see. I yelped in happiness. Not kidding.
Thanks to everyone for your advice and support. When I am done being stupefied tonight I will get to re-adjusting the valves tomorrow before the Pats dismantle the Steelers. Later.

You can owe me a beer next time I'm in the hood :-)

My daughter's threatening to go to school in Beantown and if that's the case I'll be too poor to drive or afford beer.

It took me a hour to adjust the one valve and put it back together. Didn't feel like adjusting the others in Jan. Do it this summer. Anyways, the threads must of taken a beating while the nut was off as it took a little muscle with a flat head to bottom out the foot then back it off for adjustment. Also, after doing 4 valve adjustments on both 964, I finally figured out that a couple rags shoved in in the oil return tubes stops the loss of oil. Anyways, all is well. Thanks for all the input. What a relief..
