Suspension advice for street-only
Hi guys, I'm looking for advice on replacing the front and rear shocks on my '89 964. Here are my priorities:
• This car will be my daily driver on pretty terrible streets (Chicago).
• I'm not looking to lower the car from stock.
• Price.
Best value that my research has shown, given the above constraints, is Bilstein B6 (used to be "Bilstein HDs")... does this seem correct?
Also: I assume I'll need new springs as it is not recommended to reuse the old ones? If so, which springs should be used for a smooth smooth non-track ride?
I promise I'm not 100 years old, I put the car through its paces sometimes.
Thanks.

Who told you that you can't reuse the original springs with replacement shocks like Bilstein?
I put in HD's with the original springs 25k miles ago and there have been zero issues.

Most coilover set ups run very much like stock.
H&R
KW
Silvers or alike eBay ones
The Bilstein shocks and stock or Eibach or H&R springs is a good combination as well.
Don't forget to evaluate the shock mounts as they could be replaced. Some coilover setups don't need shock mounts.
There was a KW group buy that was a good deal, search this 964 page and you can reach out to see if it's still applicable.
A good thread to look through is the teardown thread by UN Ghougary.

It's also worth mentioning that for an additional ~$60 per side for the struts (didn't check the pricing on the rears), you can purchase new factory Porsche parts from Sunset Porsche.
I suspect the Porsche units will be a bit more compliant than the Bilstein sport shocks/struts.

Bilstein b6 and eibach springs are perfect.
If you really want stock ride height, stick with your oem springs. You can use them without worry.
But I prefer bilstein b6 and eibach together.
I have a set I removed from my car btw. They are built and ready to be bolted into a pre-91 car. Not many miles on them. They aren't new. But they are effectively like new if you want to save some money and toss these in, send me a pm and we can discuss.

Keep your current springs if you are happy with the ride height.
Bilstein HD's carry an unlimited lifetime warranty against defects; Porsche shocks only have a 2 year warranty.
Both will work very nicely with your stock springs.
