Factory Paint thickness?

How about a State where it was purchased?
I'm going to hold off naming him for now because there is a chance, albeit a small one, that the car was sprayed before he acquired it without his knowledge. However, that seems highly unlikely to me given the fact that he also operates a restoration shop that routinely turns out blue ribbon cars. If anyone can spot a respray it should be this guy. Maybe he never put a meter on it?

I been collecting P cars for 20+ years. It does not take a rocket scientist to assume the dealer based on his typical crooked dealings and the fact that you mentioned restoration shop is Bruce Canepa right ? ...
what do I win ?

For the other 99.9%, i just assume ANY used car has some paintwork. I'm not a collector so it's easier on my mental state when i assume that and I find something that looks like it may be paintwork :-)

I just measured mine yesterday.
1991, guards red. Except for the higher part of the bonnet where it is 150 micron, all the rest of the car is between 180 and 200 micron.

Update, since my last post and the last bump I spent some money on legal and I dropped it. I've been involved in exactly one big legal fight in my life and it wasn't fun. We won, but in the end it was still a bummer.
To cobalt, yes, mils, not microns. Double digits, every panel but one. The highest is 18. Definitely not factory. I love the car. It's beautiful and it drives like a dream but I have some receipts for track inspections from the previous owner.
My guess is it was peppered with rock chips and the seller (dealer, not the individual) sprayed the entire car. The rear panel (below the tail) reads 7 but it is the only one in single digits. I paid 355k for the car. I was in love with it and figured it was at least worth 320 or so at the time. I justified the premium in my mind with PTS, 2 owner, 16k etc...
With a high quality respray I figure it's worth 225 or so. My collector buddy who knows these cars says 175 but he's a pessimist. He thinks resprayed PTS car are colorless bastards worth less than their Guards Red mothers. He might be right. My lawyer agreed but wanted me on retainer for eternity. In the end, the thing is straight as an arrow (alignment rig agreed), and hasn't been wrecked, just sprayed.
Lawsuits are messy, unpredictable, expensive no matter what, and generally not fun. What's tough is getting over the "bad beat" and enjoying the car. My wife calls it our bastard stepchild. And it's true. I own two battery tenders. The 930 and 997 get them. The 964 rots on the vine.

That is a sad story. It is a shame that some unscrupulous person took advantage and tainted the entire experience. They truly are unique and great cars. But there are far too many I speak to that have had similar experiences with 964's. Finding an all original paint car is not an easy task. I have only seen a handful since early 2000. I looked at a car yesterday that I disappointed the owner when I discovered the cowal below the front windshield he paid big $$ to have fixed properly was only filled with bondo and painted over. Even the highly regarded body shop is suspect and you can't seem to trust anyone lately.
The meter doesn't lie.
I wish you the best and hope that at some point you get past the experience and can appreciate the car for what it is.

Thanks Cobalt. It's funny how love for a car blinds you. I recently bought my wife a 4 year old E class and insisted on a proper ppi but I let myself get talked out of it on a car worth 10 times that. Whoops. I hope to put enough miles on it this summer that it eventually becomes part of the family.
