Default heat from cat

Any of you guys still running a cat ?... what kind of heat do you get off it ? For some reason never paid much attention to the cat, but recently realised after a spirited run there is quite a bit of heat around the left hand rear wheel .. not sure if this has always been the case or maybe the cat is just hotter than usual

The cats get very hot. They do not start working until 400-600 F and can get up to 1600 F.

I think that is why there is so much heat shielding around it.

Rene at Rensport told me that sides valves always go first due to the heat from the cat. Cat delete for me. And sounds better.

My experience has been that the cat ran hotter when I had performance chips installed. The heat caused 2 tire sidewalls to fail. I ended up putting heat tape around shield. Now have stock chip back in and haven't had a problem over life of tires.

Found this:

The catalytic converter heat shield looking through the left side rear wheel opening. I have measured the cat itself at well over 700 degrees. And I wouldn't be surprised if it went another couple hundred degrees above that in some situations.

From my experience in the UK, a 'sport cat', which is a cat that has an element about a half of the length of the OEM version, passes the MOT.

I took the cat and primary out. Put the cat back in as it was too noisy and stunk badly with all the unburnt fuel. Interestingly I have never had to put a cat back on on any other vehicle due to smell (I've removed them from many bikes and performance cars over the years)

Has / Does anyone run a Sport Cat with a Cup pipe?

How loud is it compared to a de-cat?

I am keen to lose the cat to reduce the heat in that area but already run a cup pipe, I feel a cup pipe and decat is to loud.

Who manufacturers a decent Sport Cat for a 964?

I run a Fabspeed sport cat with no heat shielding, cup pipe, and stock secondary muffler. Not loud at all, but I get back fire "pop" every now and then. I've thought about heat wrapping the cat and cup pipe

if you're tracking the car run a bypass pipe.

Track use is very hard on the cat, generates LOTS of heat.

Removing Cat on mine didn't add much to the volume.
