Default Advice please - blue smoke on the overrun

Whilst stopped at traffic lights the other day a friendly motorcyclist leant over and complimented the car, but then told me it was smoking. Over the weekend I followed my wife while she drove it and indeed there were puffs of blue smoke from the exhaust, particularly when decelerating.

Seemed OK at idle and when accelerating. Can't be sure what happens on start up but haven't noticed anything alarming, in any case don't these flat 6s often puff a little blue smoke on start up if they've been left for a bit?

Is this a sign of an expensive engine re-build, or as suggested by a fellow 964 owner possibly a blocked oil breather? Hoping the latter and she feels as lively as ever, but at 85k miles and no refresh one never knows. She's only just had a major service at Tuthill's and they said she was fine.

Thanks in advance

If you rev it up in say 2nd or 3rd gear and suddenly lift off the gas and get some smoke it's a sign valve guides are wearing.

What's your oil consumption like?

Thanks for that. Not too sure what consumption is like - don't do enough miles! Haven't topped it up since it was serviced so I'll check mileage and report back.

Porsche says that approx. 1.5 lit. per 1000 km is normal for our cars.

That could be part of the issue. Drive the car and beat on it!
If you're adding a quart every 500-1000 miles, you need to have the top end looked at.

It could be that they overfilled it with oil when you had it serviced. What is the oil level on the stick and the gauge when engine is warm and idling ??

Update. Finally this weekend found time to get it properly warm and check the level with the dipstick to find it has indeed been over filled. A bit disappointing really, not only because it should not have happened in the first place, but also because I live a long way from Tuthill so will have to rectify it myself.

A couple of questions please:

Will it have caused any damage?
Is it a relatively straightforward process to drain some oil out?

It shouldn't have caused any damage, but if really overfilled it can contaminate the ISV I think.

Get a turkey baster and some hose and use that to suck some oil out of the tank through the filler hole.
