Engine Rebuild Intermediate Shaft Oil Cover Part
Does anyone know what this part does? i removed it from the the most recent engine teardown and put away neatly with the cover so assume it came off prior to splitting the case.

Its a cap that can be removed to access the intermediate shaft gear for the chain correlation procedure. The chains have to be shimmed in or out at the camshaft to run "true" and compensate for the 54.8mm difference in distance from left to right sides.

can i run without it? it appears to be able to push into the engine area and i'm afraid to lose it in there... also, i did not have snap ring when removing last time... and there is a threaded hole on one side of this 'aluminum plug'...

It needs to be in there. Install with the factory tool which is basically a long 6mm bolt, clean the sleeve and put some green loktite in with it and a new snapring. It's not that bad you can do it.

thanks for the tip. does the snap ring go in and sits in a groove then install the plug? i have the m6 bolt - same 'factory' tool used to install the cross shaft on the transmission. similar to the 'factory' tool to set the cams - a spark plug..
