Anyone have a similar experience. I found 1 post that said you have to take extra care around the corners as they are sharper curves. Does this ring a bell with anyone else that has tried to fit these covers?

Thanks for help,

Dan
Mine leak too. I need to follow some advice from this thread and put something on there the next time I do a valve adjustment.

I have the Rennline upper and lower valve covers with silicone gaskets from Pelican and they have not leaked a drop. Torqued to 7lbs as per Adrian's book.

Derek,

I looked at Pelican's gaskets. None specifically said they were silicon. Which Brand did you use?

Default Not to be super obvious but...

I've had no problems with billet covers and the standard seals. I know we all know this... (pause)

but 7 ft lbs is not very much... just barely wrist tight. Over tightened means they are more likely to leak. It seems counter-intuitive to be super gentle on the torque, but it has worked for me every time.

Perfect!!!

O-rings are NOT like flat gaskets or seals and they are quite easy to ruin with a little too much torque on the fasteners. When it comes to the correct sealing pressure; "Less is More".

Anyone know where to get a torque wrench that is for lighter torque values? I swear there was one made for bicycles that could be used on things like carbon fiber bars and stuff. I've been trying to find it forever, would be perfect for jobs like this though.

I use a small 3/8 inch/lbs torque wrench for anything under 10 ft/lbs.

You need a torque wrench that measures so low, it is in "inch-pounds". So, 7ft-lbs is 84 inch-pounds.

I have a wrench that measures something like 20-150 inch-pounds...

As far as mine weeping, the valves were adjusted just before I purchased about a year ago, so I don't know exactly what was done. Maybe I just pull the covers, replace the gaskets, torque correctly and see where we are....

There's

If you have an inch-pound one then you're good.

That's the one!

LPMM, I don't think mine goes down that far. It's the craftsman one. I'll have to run out and check.

I have a Craftsman as well, should be good since it goes from 25 to 250 inch-pound (you need 84 inch-pound).

If I wanted to remove the lower valve covers to fuss with the gaskets I.m guessing I should drain the crankcase to avoid a mess. Correct?

If so, as the oil has just been changed, how much oil would I have to replace (without draining the tank)?

I could wait till next change, but the oil gets all over rear bumper and makes a mess.

The shop is suggesting milling the covers down so the gaskets compress more. Before I go that route, I thought I'd try carefully installing a new gasket. Then, if that doesn't work, some sealer.

Thanks for help,

Dan
