Default Rear CV joint failure?

I maybe on to something ......

During my brake refresh I thought I would poke around and see if I can find my drivetrain issue ... I suspect Rear CV joint and want to know what you folks experience doing the same simple test;

Car on all four jack points, wheels off, car in neutral and level....

Drivers side rear axle, I grab in middle and push in to inner cv and pull out towards outer, nice and free and quiet and when extended, bounces right back to center.

Passenger side SUSPECTED, same test and get a audible single clack with quick pull from inner towards outer and axle acts like dead fish and stays where pushed/pulled either side? My approach will be to remove half axle and replace inner on that axle.

Thoughts on test? And... How does yours react in same test?

This could be a really good day.... :-|

If it clicks at low speed and as you speed up it starts chattering then its probably the CV.

Bump to my specific questions ? Track peeps must be burning up CV's routinely, hence, thoughts and sounds?

What I think is good side axle;

What I think may be bad side axle;

Let's try this approach;

Does video two sound troubling to those familiar with trouble shooting drivetrain/suspension issues? I will pull the axle out and exam, so, let me hear your vote, good or bad axle issue?

I'm at work and can't hear the videos. CVs should not have any play or looseness in them. If you have any, then you need to replace that CV.

Rob,

New development... I removed that axle and cv' s seem to be fine... The noise in second video was the diff flange with in out play causing clack... Doesn't have that clack on driver side that I can tell... IIRC, Adrian's book maybe, it was mentioned that the bit of play is normal?

A small bit of play is normal. Drive it till it breaks.

But...that said. While the axle is out, replacing the axle flange seal is relatively easy. So you may want to do that since you are in there.

You can see pics on the suspension madness thread...
