Default Wipers won't switch off!

Ive searched the forum for something similar but can't seem to find anything..

Randomly this afternoon, starting my car, the wipers start. They're in the off position.
Switch them to intermittent and still on normal. Twiddle with intermittent **** - no change.
Switch them to on, still one speed. Switch them to very fast, they go very fast.
Clean windows, they go very fast until a release the arm, then go back to normal speed.
In the Off position again, they remain wiping away merrily!

Stopped and started the car many times.... no change.
Changed the R42 relay with the one in my other car that I know works fine and there is no difference, so ruling that one out.

(I do have an issue with my indicator stalk not resetting after turning... could the whole unit have met its end or is it a different relay issue?)
Thanks for any help!

A new motor sounds expensive & even more difficult to change over? Anyone done it?

No one else?
After starting and stopping the engine to try and get the wipers to stop, and only taking it out for less than 5 mins, the battery is now flat :-(
Could a bad battery have caused some weird behaviour with the wipers?

No.

The wiper motor has 2 sources for power, home/start/stop and travel. the travel source is always powered with ignition on. The home/start/stop switch position is powered only with your stalk "on" position.

Not done it, but it's in the Workshop Manual Pages 92-1/2.

I had an issue with my wipers not returning to the seated position due to the wiper motor ground wire that became unattached. Might be a possibility to look into

In order to get to the motor - did I read somewhere that the speedo has to come out etc and get to it that way?

Indeed, once I did RTFM, i had read correctly, thanks.

An update.
After the battery had been charged, the issue is no longer there. Wipers work normally. Checked (most) of the earthing points under the bonnet and all seems ok. Ofcourse, not yet checked the wiper motor earth.
