I looked at it as a roughly $40,000 car, but instead of plunking it down all at once, I had a $22,500 buy-in to get on the road, then a few grand to maintain, a few more for "nice to have" mods, a few more squirrelled away for the miscellaneous 25 year old parts that eventually need replacing - just hope they don't all come at once.
When asked, a petrol-head would sooner volunteer their yearly salary sooner they would what they invest in their cars per year!

I think the better question is, HOW MUCH ARE YOU SAVING? A modern premium car would set you back on average at the very least $12k/year...an Audi possibly less, BMW, Mercedes, and Porsche more. I'm talking the good stuff not the entry model. Plus, those are annual losses to lease a new car which most people change every 3-4 years.
I agree that a 964 is a $40k car, if you want to put in a $40k engine well that is a different story but also means you would make the calculation based on a much more expensive premium car. Then you amortize that $40k over the next 10 or 15 or 20 years and you are saving a lot of money....plus you are getting a much nicer unique ride.
Then after the next 20 years, this car is going to be worth a lot more then $40gs...so basically it is going to pay for itself.

You it's a good question street daddy. I've spent a small fortune but it's something that I love doing. This years only just started and my new rs flywheel and clutch has arrived. I don't do half measures so the whole lots getting replaced, forks the lot.
For me it always going or be a money put but the joy I get from the car once I mod/fix it is what it's all about. Actually taking it out for a good run is really what makes it special.
I'm planning kw v3 this year wi some sway bars and tool mounts and an rs interior, once they are done I'm Looking at some split rims. I suppose the old girl is due a new paint job too. If you look at the above there are a few grand in changes with out any maintenance so the usual running repairs will need done along the way.
It's never ending but it's way worth it.
I also have an old 1968 mini that I have had since I was 18, I plan on some work to that this year. No rebuild just a tidy and play.
