Brazil, Peru or Alaska are the only pieces of land 3420 miles away from Dallas. I was hoping the direction of the needle would pin point the location but one is pointing SW while the other is east/SE which doesn't make any sense!

Well, unless you were pissed I'd go with Aussie land, but down under for you yanks is China and in China you're not allowed to drive without a local driving license.

Perth to Darwin, via Adelaide, which is approx. 5500 KM's or 3500 miles!

Including return trip, it would be less than 1,710 miles away if you include some touring around when you were there. Maybe California or New York?
