Question is, how do i dress up the exposed shaft? I dont want to take the shift boot all the way up to the ****. Can i just get a piece to cover up the exposed shaft? Anyone ever do this?

Find a shift **** that you like, check the threaded hole in the **** for size, and make yourself a lever of preferably SS polished round stock. Have a thread welded/attached to one end, that will screw into ****, tighten up good, so you know the orientation of the shift pattern on the ****, then cut your existing shift lever to match the new lever, and weld the two together. Pull the rubber boot up onto the round part of shift lever, and Bob is your uncle.

Could they weld them on site or would it have to be removed first?

It should be removed first.

Yeah, remove it first. You will also have to cut your excisting gaitor down to expose your new shift lever. The job is very doable, but will involve getting under the car, so you can get the lever out. Or you can look for a used lever and do it all in one sitting.

Thanks guys. I bought this shift **** today for $40. Now i need to find a correct shift pattern insert. They sure dont make it easy for us to upgrade our shifters! Somebody needs to make a slip on shaft to make this easier!

I'll buy your old shifter/boot if you're getting rid of it.

LMK if you want to sell it.

I have been keeping all my stock parts to give to the next owner if i ever sell it.

I am looking for a black one though if anyone has an old one laying around. I will be cutting off the top,so it doesn't have to be in good shape.

I do like that you are doing this, because I also love the Singer shifter. To get the ideal look, I would say the welding option is the best, but you still need to find the right tray and boot. In theory, if you just want the **** for now, you can vinyl wrap the exposed shaft in something like brushed-black trim. Would look something like this image, and a small piece of vinyl is pretty cheap.

Like this but with a factory black gaitor cut down. I don't like his gaitor stitching.
