996 only if you have no desire to take on the track. M6 is a very large gt car, not a sports car like 996. For a cheap daily driver, there's nothing better for the money than an e39 m5.

Another thing to consider would be the new A3/S3 sedan. I just spent over a week in an A3 as a loaner (2.0t), and it was actually quite a bit of fun to drive. Honestly didn't feel any slower than my V10 S8. Good amount of space inside too.

A W210 series Mercedes e55 would be my choice. Fast, cheap, understated and the perfect match for a 964. Here are two nice examples: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Ben...US_Cars_Trucks. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Ben...US_Cars_Trucks

BMW M6 (2006-2008) automanual/6 speed
Audi S5 (2007-2010) V8 4.2 engine
I wrote an article for AudiWorld on the S5 when it first came out:

I love the car, and trust it helps in the decision making.

Driving a 2010 S4 Avant now, and the power delivery in the tsupercharged S4 is very similar to the V8 S5.

Currently loving the S4 to bits, and the stealth mode (apart from the Brilliant Red paintwork )

Don't you love having to make decisions like this! I've just done this myself so have spent months deliberating the same thing. People have already mentioned pretty much everything I thought of, 996 c2 but I scared myself off that one (yes I know it will probably be fine!) The girlfriend had just sold her base 987 boxster and considered taking that off her, probably the best handling car I've ever driven and so reliable but had just hit 120000 miles so I thought it time to move it on. I nearly got a z3 m coupe but couldn't find a nice enough one. In the end a 996 turbo came up at a price I couldn't refuse and I couldn't be happier. So fast and great for long distance blasts. The only other one I can't believe no one has mentioned, and also.the one I was going to get until the turbo came up was an e46 m3! Arguably the best straight six ever and handling to die for, also I'd have got one for peanuts at the minute.
Some one mentioned Clio cups etc, my first car was a 172 Clio sport. Miss that thing, I could spend all day just wasting fuel on the back roads. You soon remembered it was a Clio on a long journey though! Have fun choosing, but seriously, get a drive in an e46

Having the VAG-COM cables makes everything easier. The Audi 4.2 engine is tough on gas. Since they share A4 body parts and A6/All-Road drivetrains from the era, spare parts are plentiful and (somewhat more) reasonable compared to Porsche. Reason being like yours, Sabine is 'done' and the Jetta offers few mod options other than suspension.
Thank Laker I will look into this in more depth.

I may just have to take you on that offer. Where about are you in DE?

Yes but the M6, 996, and S5 can be had for mid to upper 20s.

There is something very sexy about these lines that just get me ,..

I know its a pig and a gas guzler, but any car with 560 hp and gobes of torque has to be fun to drive. Plus it get's to 60 in 4.6 sec.

If you read the reviews, the E39 M5 comes out above the later V10 M5 most of the time.
Yes, it's slower, but it's a lovely car to drive.
If you want a coupe, yes the M6 is probably lighter and one way to go, but I've never been a lover of the 6 series, it's looks pretty ugly to me!

What about a BMW M e36.... with a LS6 V8? (or any chevy V8)

The monster Chevy V8 with a Camaro 6-speed is the same weight (or within 100 lbs) as the straight 6 with stock gearbox. There are some really good kits out there and let me tell you the sound is to die for. Lumpy cam V8 sound that just silences everyone around the car. I rode in one a while back and it was quite the experience, chirping the tires in 3rd gear! Mega power and sound combined with excellent M3 handling. Definitely a sleeper... until you start it up.

It's the first car that actually made me think about selling the 964 (my only car and I have two kids). Make mine a M3 e36 sedan with a quieter exhaust.
