As someone trying to replace my totaled 964 C2 coupe (daily driver and no other car is an option) I wish the world was still naive on how great these cars really are. Classic looks, excellent performance that you have control of (instead of the car overriding your mistakes) and don't get me started on the roar at 4,000 rpm...

When I bought my 993 in March 2014 I had been looking for a year. I drove a local 964 and 993 back to back and the differences were clear. 964 is more raw and fun to drive with classic 911 look and character. 993 has wonderful curves and is little more refined for daily driving. The local 993 c4s hit all the right buttons for me.

I still watch the market as I would like to have both!

I have been teaching a buddy about the air cooled 911 market and when he saw the red 89 c4 for sale in ontario he immediately said he loved that style more than 993. I think nostalgia is driving the 964 market.

Similar story for me....
2012...
I'm very local to TruSpeed and when I would go and check their showroom, I would ask about any 964s for sale and the stock answer was "you don't want one of those. They are leakers" Of course their cars were typically twice the price of a similar condition 964....
Found my car on CraigsList 600 miles away. Set up a PPI at DeJung Motorsport in NorCal. He calls me before doing the PPI and asks why I want this car, do I know of the problems?
Yes, yes please proceed.
2 years later, the car is still wonderfull and I am glad that I ignored the 'experts' !
Oh, and the oil leaks...
I have 3 old Alfa Romeos. A little oil on the garage floor is nothing compared to the sheer driving pleasure !

[QUOTE=2 years later, the car is still wonderfull and I am glad that I ignored the 'experts' ! Oh, and the oil leaks... I have 3 old Alfa Romeos. A little oil on the garage floor is nothing compared to the sheer driving pleasure ![/QUOTE] Sorry to jump in again in this thread, but again, so true! After owning English cars, I don't see what the fuss is over a bit of oil on the floor. That's how you know there's oil in there! Not a day has passed that I don't love the 964. Even with the occasional oil drip. They are simply Fantastic examples of 911s. I also found it interesting that I heard from more than one porsche shop, 'the 964 almost bankrupted porsche'. The inference is that this is somehow related to the 964 being bad. Quite the opposite, the cars have insanely high build quality and were tremendously well engineered. Super high development and manufacturing cost, to me, mean the car is a huge value. The engineering of a 959 for the a fraction of the cost. Enough said! Long live the 964!

Oil leaks are the rust prevention program for a lot of English and Italian cars !

Same thing here. I was originally looking for a longhood hotrod or a backdated 3.2 but could not find what I wanted. When I switched my focus to the 964, a few places tried to talk me out of it saying pretty much the same thing about 964s, and told me to consider 993s instead. I am so glad I ignored these naysayers and purchased my 964 instead, tons of fun and classic looks.

I am counting on using this exact way of thinking when I purchase my 964. I will tell the seller That I really don't like the 964.. I am really looking for a 993 but they are hard to find and expensive. I have heard that the 964 is the red headed stepchild of the 911 family and I am concerned with the car leaking oil. This is not the car that I want, but I am prepared to buy it but only if it's a price a can't refuse. Hopefully they are not a rennlist member and have been under a rock for a few years. Lol. But I have to agree that the 964 does not get the respect it deserves but the RS model is changing that. RS prices are driving other 964 prices up. I went from wanting an 86-89, to a 964, to a 993, now I have made up my mind on a 964 coupe.. As soon as the money is right and I find one. For me it is all aesthetics. To me, the 964 coupe is the baddest looking air cooled porsche. Lowered, deep 18" wheels, tinted windows... Pure artwork.

Anyone who's been looking for a 964 in the last couple of years knows full well that the 964 is definitely NOT the "red headed step child" of Porsches. A truly great car once misunderstood.

Side note, I've never understood how anyone considered the model a "slow seller". It's production numbers run very close to that of the "successful" 993 series.

To me, the 964 marks the end of the "old" Porsche.
993 marks the beginning of the "new"

(996 is a dark place)

If posts like that make a 993 owner feel better about his purchase... just let him.

I've got better things to do... like drive my 964.

I was told 964 leak oil, prone to weak A/C and maintains the rear weight bais of the torsion bar cars....

Realistically, most Porsches leak oil. My GT3 does.

Just ask Walter Rohrl which one he likes (in RS form)!
