8am this morning down to the station, Victoria tube across London to Marylebone then on to Banbury by 10.30 in the sheeting rain.
Nick kindly picked me up from the station, which was bit further from Brackley than I thought, glad didn't volunteer to take a taxi.
Fantastic to see the 964 rolling again! And to add to warm glow a certain rennlister had left me a little present with Nick.
On the way Nick pointed out the brakes were binding a little, the pedal wasn't fully returning - an odd new defect. Then as we arrived at the unit Nick noticed a nasty grinding noise. We look around; couldn't see anything obvious. So I headed off into the rain for a three hour drive home via Nuneaton to pickup a lightweight prop for the Nissan. I got to the end of the road when Nick called to say he spotted something under the car as I drove away. Gamely doning a plastic sack poncho to protect from the deluge, Nick retrieved a folded up cat heat shield from the passenger wheel well and I was off again.
6hrs engine time ahead... Below 4k rpm.
250miles later the engine news is good. Not a sign of oil anywhere. No odd noises. And a hint of some healthy power to come
Some frustrations though. The front bumper has picked up a scuff, maybe on the trailer and the idle is bloody bumpy, not just lively cam style, more like mental race car needs 2k rpm to idle style. Both easily fixed no doubt.
A second level of more general annoyances; the electrics continue to suffer from the repeated soakings the car had in the last year. Drives seat front adjust, passenger window and sunroof motors all awol. Oh and I set fire to the brakes on the m25. Other than that life is good.

Completely. I haven't had one for years and the kids ride in the back weekly.

Ah yeah, as it turned out I ended up with a new sound pad - was going to cost more to clean up the residue of the old one than buy an new one and stick it over.

So I've spoken to Nick;
He thinks the bouncing pressure gauge at idle is just a loose connection.
He'll also have a look at the idle and just off idle running - it is rougher than I'd expect and I'm sure rougher than I remembered Jack's. There are a couple of differences between mine and Jack's though - I've not got a cup pipe and I've got the weird option 150 - no emission controls ecu, which basically means no lambda sensor and no closed loop. Anyway they may need to tweak the map slightly.
And the paintwork is going to get done when he has it back for "first service".

Why not just run with an O2 sensor? There is no benefit to running without one AND it provides extra feedback to the Motronic ECU that really improves the running of the engine.

The cd of pics has arrived from Nick
The money shots: just one missing headstud!
The £8,000 head stud
Heads cleaned and reassembled with some new valves and guides
Nicely cleaned up Ps & Cs and rods
Under the heading "trust but verify": some identifying marks so I know these are pictures of my engine; to the left of the oil inlet fitting is my freshly drilled and tapped hole for the heat shield which I did two years back when I had the engine out for the clutch

Frustratingly the car hasn't turned a wheel since the 9th of June, as I've not had time to get the pedal box out and address the binding brake pedal but I'm hoping to get into it today...

A little vid of the idle and oil pressure. Its quiet but if you turn it up you can hear the bumpy idle clearly and you can see the oil pressure needle bouncing in synch. What you can't see is the way the car rocks. Initial no throttle then a small amount to bring the idle up which stabilises the oil pressure but the idle now hunts. Finally i open the throttle in small increments to get past the hunt. From 1500rpm the revs run away with a constant throttle I'm not sure you could hold it at a steady 2000rpm.
