[QUOTE=jevvy964;11192918]I've been running the PC 680 for about 4 years now. After multiple drains to empty its starting to fade and will need replacing soon.

There are some new kids on the block though:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lithium-Io...item338bca9474

Now I'm not saying thats the right battery but its close and its under 1.5 kg's (PC 680 is 7kg)!

that's the one, perfect ! the blue button is to tell you how is the charge,

And most the the thinking is old too...

Think outside of the box, think of how you can take advantage of electric vehicle technology, BUT not have to drive one?

My battery should still be good for a couple more years, but my next battery will be similar to what Steve Wong made. If it's good enough for Steve, it's more than good enough for me. Such a clever guy!

Thread from Pelican:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/714823-who-street-legal-under-850kgs-1-875lbs-2.html

Steve says, "Want to take a lightweight battery to the next level?

Four ultra powerful A123 Systems lithium packs, originally developed for the Chevy Volt, used in the Fisker Karmas.

Total weight including case: 6.5 lbs. Power equivalent of a 60 lb lead acid battery."

Jetta, this is all very interesting. What sort of cost to put that together?

I did a quick search to make sure it wasn't a $1000 battery. After a quick eBay search, it looks like each A123 battery pack costs ~$40 each (X4). Plus a couple connectors and and old battery case. Not bad. I'd gladly pay $2-300 for a 6 lb. battery.

Udo,
I just a bit of my own research on these.
Looks like you can buy a pack of 20 cells for about $1400 and about 50% cheaper if you search long enough. I reckon that for around $300 you could have a very light battery.
Anyone else interested in trying this out?

I didn't expect to spark (again no pun intended!) so much debate!

Those lithium A123 batteries wired in series look like a great mod but seems you need a little more battery / electronics knowledge than the average guy to use them safely? Such as checking the voltage regulator is delivery the correct charge, using certain conditioners or chargers when not using the car, etc.?

The RS style battery might be a good short term compromise for me. The Bosch 063 silver S4 (44Ah) weighs 11.3kg and costs £40, so it saves 6kg ish. The comparable specs on the Odyssey 925 look worse at 28 Ah and 380cca: http://www.batterymegastore.co.uk/pr...FQcTwwodylYAyQ

I'm guessing the Odyssey specs are not directly comparable in this way?

Any thoughts on whether air con will have much impact on the smaller 063 battery?

Tempted to make a Steve Wong battery out of the remnants of my old one though. I see there are 30 of these batteries on UK eBay for £1200. Group buy anyone?

Stan, you are absolutely right about electronics knowledge.

I have done a bit more research and waiting for some feed back. Once I have that information, I should be able to shred some light on what needs to be done to build these.

With the engine running it doesn't really matter which battery you have or how many electrical items you are running as the alternator can provide much more than the car could ever use. Smaller batteries are only an issue if you like to listen to the radio and have the ac on when the engine isn't running

+ 1 ,
AC on = engine on for our cars, isn't it

Just checking ;-)

Bought a Bosch 063 S4 from Euros for now.

Stuart, update this thread when you find out more about the lithium batteries!

Hi guys
I run a Super B lithium and thus far it has been perfect I tried a B10P but it just wasn't quite enough cranking power so got the B15P-SC. The biggest problem I found was trying to get a direct comparison of the stats no one seemed to be able to tell me which was which!!

I emailed Steve Wong and he has very kindly given me a link to a company that can provide most of the other hardware.
i will talk to them and see where it goes from there.
