Default Noise at ~ 3200 revs (Updated: Car Died with lots of noise and smoke)

Getting a worrying noise at around 3200rpm's. Sounds like "dagadagadaga" after wife borrowed the car (don't say it!!!!!)

Performance apperars unaltered and noise goes away under or over this approx engine speed.

Should I fill-out remortgage forms or is it possibly something innocuous like a loose heat-shield or something?

Cheers,

I had similar noise and it turned out to be the heatshield on the rear under-tray.

Remove the under-tray and check it, if it's lose then rip out the old rivets and put new ones in...

Check for any loose heat shields on or around the exhaust.

You may need to replace your 'dagadaga'.

Almost home last night, a large noise began, which continued to get louder. then the power dropped. I was about 3/4 mile from my mechanic so decided to chance it and keep going, so I could drop it off.

Stopped at the traffic light, dashboard lit-up and car stalled. Smoke began pouring from engine. Upon trying to restart (I was on a freeway off-ramp) it sounded like rocks in a spin-dryer. Car had to be put on a flat-bed to make the last 1/2 mile. Doesn't look good....

Its only been the morning and I'm missing her already!

A thunk? Eek! Fingers crossed for you, hoping its a simple (read not expensive) fix.

Sat here wondering what time my mechanic will call (he is a very well respected guy and someone I trust completely)

Can't relax....just pacing around the house like I'm waiting on the birth of another child!

God, I hope its not a rebuild!!!

My good friend had the same issue with his 3.6--minus the smoke. He spun a rod bearing. He shut it down before any major damage (case & cylinders) occurred.

Oh-oh sounds serious.

That was my first guess: spun a rod bearing.

Oh Howard... really hope it's better news than a rod bearing.
