Default Rust repairs to a Scottish C4 - pics

This is a car with 120k miles, driven year round, originally from London. I have had her (on and off – see my other thread) in North Fife for nearly 10 years. The PO was in Edinburgh. The PO before that was in Shetland. So she got a bit salty in the course of 21 years of unfailing duty, time for a look-over.

Stripped down for that…

..flatnose look.

OK and to business.

Rear quarter to bumper, where the wet mud sits in a ledge behind.

Rear light shell, also where a big heap of mud and sand sits happily behind the rear light heat shield.

Up under the rear rubber. I forgot to take the lower corner but you have all seen it…it was bad though. There was water leaking in.

Front was bad too!

Both sides – and thu pinholes all the way along the scuttle. Leaking in here too, what the frick? Actually, partly a bad previous repair I suspect.

Next place, along the sill behind the plastic trim – there’s a seam. Check it people!

And the usual place behind the sharkfin, it starts around the edges of the holes in the shell. It can get nasty here.

Where else? Rear quarter was better than I thought.

Rear bumper mount needed tidying up.

Going to be great when she’s back. Slate Grey is so nice.

Is that a new rear light box that you've had put in rather than replace the whole quarter?

This is a R-rated thread...put some clothes on that girl!
Wow, these cars look scary with their clothes off.

With the rear window out and the headliner corners loosened and undone, do you need to replace the headliner? Or can the existing headliner be reglued and attached?

Slate Grey rules!

This is one of the two classic bodyshops in the metropolis that is Alyth, near Blairgowrie. The guy I use is Gordon Needs - he used to work at the other bodyshop as their foreman, but fell out with them and so set up on his own two streets away. They are all about blower bentleys and pre war rollers etc it seems anyway. Gordon is a great guy. My experience is that bodyshop work is pretty much a sliding scale from **** to flawless, and you have to decide your own price point on that scale. Gordon is at a great place on that scale - he wont spend hours getting an unbelieveable result at an eyewatering price, but he is one of the extremely rare guys who will promise that the rust he fixes will not come back. He's also a good laugh, laid back and has a good value dorich twang.

Sure is, well spotted!

Just going to retain the headlining. I am trying to keep a lid on this resto as it is mainly designed to let me keep driving the car for another 20 years, rather than winning shows.

I have heard pretty mixed reports on classic restorations over the years, however I will probably pop up to see Gordon to give it a once over.

cheers

Mine had some of the same rust areas and we kept the headliner as well. Good luck and keep pics coming.
