Default VIN / Chassis Numbers

Hi All

Just a silly question as to whether I am able to trace a vehicle based on the VIN number (which I understand is supposed to match with the last 5 numbers of the Chassis Number). I was looking at a 964 Turbo which was stolen recovered and has had its Chassis Number removed and replaced with a new non-Porsche Chassis number after having been recovered years ago.

Have been looking for a nice clean 964 Turbo for about 7+ months and due to lack of vehicles here in Malaysia, may still go for the stolen recovered vehicle (but at a significant discount)...

Just wondering whether I would be able to attempt to try to trace the history if the VIN number hasn't also been removed. Is the VIN number on the engine block??

Many thanks for any pointers... Have been reading the threads and you guys are a wealth of info...

Nope, no vin on the engine block. There is an ID number on the block so you can kind of guess by that number if the engine is original.

You would be able to do a fair amount of tracing by vin, I would think, and there is a couple places where you could find the VIN: Lable inside the door jam. A pilliar tag, and it's stamped on a tab in the trunk.

VIN numbers are typically stamped on most body parts - hood, fenders, frame

In the UK the VIN and chassis number are the same thing. It's the number on the plate under the hood on the inner wing and also stamped by the gas tank. Are you referring to the shell/tub number? This is usually a 7 digit number stamped on the rear parcel shelf (under the carpet) and also the last 4 digits of that number will be stamped on the hood (by the left hinge) and also on the engine cover (on the back edge between the hinges). This number bares no resemblance to the VIN/chassis number. Hope that makes sense!

Thanks all.. have been away for a bit and just checked on this thread... was looking for a way to trace the history of the vehicle as the number under the hood has been filed away... if there are other places where the Vin appears, then i thought i might be able to at least try to trace some history of the particular vehicle i am looking at...

Reviving an old thread ... I'm looking at 1989 C2 vehicle which has an insurance write off back in 1994 but is now 'rebuilt' . Looks to be structurally and mechanically very sound but there are some questions from local registration as to the authenticity of the VIN. The VIN and engine numbers match but that is not enough to satisfy them ... there is a long back story around why they are suspicious.

My question is whether there is anyway of matching the build number found on the rear parcel shelf (and elsewhere) to the original VIN number. I assume that record must exist but my local Porsche Dealer is not able to help. Any help would be much appreciated.

Did you check the number behind the spare wheel?

Yep ... there is a VIN# there but the question is whether it is authentic. If I can show that the VIN# is a match to the build # that may help persuade the license guys that the VIN is correct and has not been welded in from another chassis. I believe it is the correct one but at some time it has been tampered with so the authorities are very suspicious. As I said there is a long back story to this.

Have you gotten a Porsche COA? it would list all the options on the car when built and this would be further proof if the options are still on the car......

Yep I've got that and it broadly tallies ... but really need to confirm the chassis has the correct VIN and the build numbers are the only way I can see of doing that. The options generally can be swapped so they are not persuaded by that.

Thanks for the input though

I'm sure somewhere there must be a record of the VIN numbers and build numbers.

When I exported my Turbo 3.6 to the UK I obtained a copy of its build sheet. It had no mention of body part numbers, but then again it didn’t have the engine number either. The UK buyer was able to match the VIN with engine and transmission numbers with a Porsche UK source though so there must be more records out there. Whether they tie in those body stamped numbers is another matter. I discovered the existence of those numbers from a post on the RS model authenticity. Maybe the RS specialists can help as they must deal with body originality more than our 'lesser' 964 models? Maybe someone like Adrian Crawford?

Hi John. I have a build sheet that does actually have the engine and transmission numbers but it is the body and VIN match that the NZTA are focussing on. You are right the RS guys may have more of a view on the body build numbers. Hopefully they will chime in

Hi John that is helpful ... something is definitely not right. The plot thinkens because NZTA have the vin and car registered as a Silver CS 1990 VIN WP0ZZZ96ZKS401540 but having just checked the Porsche build sheet it looks to be an '89 guards with a G6400 transmission which I believe makes it a C4 manual!

So I'm no longer convinced that the VIN is correct!

If I could just get the VIN that matches the build number then I could start unravelling the mystery.

Here is a pic of the VIN ...
