Default 1990 C2 964 H5 lamps to H4 conversion

hi all, am doing the above upgrade. bought all the stuff : lamp assembly, rubber gasket, trim ring($xx each!!), and standard 55/60W bulbs.

am i correct to think that i will not need to install a relay re-wiring for the above sistem to work safely ?

thanks
reza

Should be okay with the standard bulbs.

You will need either adapter cables, or better yet just cut off the h5 plugs and solder or crimp on the new h4 plugs. Soldering takes about 10 minutes total time if you already own a set of wire strippers and an iron.

I would recommend relays, as you will get a lot better light. I did a non-destructive install on my car with relays, and it works much better. It wasn't much more complex.
You lose a lot of power sending it all through the lightswitch/dimmer.

Daniel Stern Lighting has kits. Google. Though I have had a hard time getting him to ping me back, he has great information and good advice, as well as plug n' play kits.

+1. I've got headlights from him on both of my BMWs. Very knowledgeable, but also very 'old school' (as evidenced by his website) when it comes to technology. Be patient, es worth it.

H4 with black rims installed. took about 40 minutes. no relay for now.

had to double back cos i got the high/low wiring flipped, i just followed the h5 wiring, h4 is laterally flipped. clockwise from left to right, looking from behind the h4 female socket : should be black, brown on top, then yellow.

can't we just paint the black rim ? the extra ring with primer for body paint seems extraneous . . . how are ROW/euro h4s trims from factory ?

anyone got close up pics ?

If you do, do NOT use the wiring diagram supplied. I handed it off to my mechanic who said that it bypassed an important safety feature Porsche had designed into the system. Not a clue myself what that feature might be, but the mechanic (who has a degree in physics) redesigned it so that the 100W paint-melters are relay-controlled, fed direct from the battery, but the safety wossname is still in place.

Agreed that the light is orders of magnitude better, but beware: the original cast metal "buckets" are replaced by cheesy stamped fittings, and that all is then held in by the small tab at the bottom of the headlight aperture. The two robust tabs @ the sides no longer serve, and the small tab is thinner and has a weak thread. Plan on getting a pair of captive nuts to bracket over them. Otherwise you're going to have trouble installing the nifty interior-threaded bolt you'll buy from PelicanParts.

As they say on the Internerd, DAMHIK ...
