paint code black #741 & clearcoat
My 94 C4 turbo-look has the paint code 741 - and is not listed in Adrian's book.
What is the difference between the standard 700 black which my 92 has, and the special order blacks with codes 744 and 746 as listed in Adrian's book? And why isn't 741 listed in there???
And the reason I care - is this (code 741) plain old black, or black metallic, and does it have a clear coat?!! It looks similar to my 92...
Thanks

Ok, I did a no-no - don't tell anyone but I went over to the 993 side of this Forum and found my answer! L741 is a black with clearcoat! Love that search function!
Now it appears I'll need to add a clear-coat over my most recent touch-up job! I was thinking it needed it...

I think the list in Adrian's book is by no means complete. On the C4 I used to have, the code was L729 (Satin Black Metallic) - another that's not listed. From what I could find out, it was a colour used on older 911's.

It gets more complicated, there are different metallic blacks! Mine for example is 'Schwartz' black code number L738 which has only a small amount of alluminium and is very subtle metallic (pointless?).....

"schwartz is German for 'black'"
Yes, I know, but my bodyshop told me it is catalogued as Schwarz and he gave me the composit breakdown which is why I know mine is metallic, even though its not that obvious.
There are of course other blacks or 'schwarz' as they would undoubtedly say in Germany.
Another Rennlister reckoned the same paintcode was also known as Pearl black!

I found out from a great source (Adrian ) that because my car is a 94, it uses 993 paint codes. Makes sense, I guess...
And what is the difference between metallic black and black? Are there little silver speckles in it? My old C4 cabrio was slate grey metallic and had speckles...

So maybe the same colours are called different names depending on which year they were done.
garrett376,
yes there are little bits of metal in the base colour. Some have more than others. You may notice it more when the car is clean and in bright sunlight.

Garrett, I also have a 94 C4 TL in black - the paint code I have on the option sticker is L741 but the car is definately not metallic or clear coated. The only diff is next to the paint code it says "UN" . Could this mean UNcoated perhaps? Or UNmetallic or UNfinished or UNcool or what ?! Does your option code sticker have the same "UN" or not?
Like you say these would have to be 993 paint codes at this late stage in the production run. Interesting though.

Hi Mark!! Yes, I have the UN after the L471... I thought that was something to do with the interior, though?! The reason I thought it to be clear coated was from a post on the 993 forum where someone who has a 993 with L471 has it clear coated...
Basically, I can't tell if it's clear coated or not! The color looks the same as my 92 C4 which has the plain 700 black - so I also doubt it's metallic!

Hi Garrett,
I don't really know what the "UN" means - I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure my car at least, is not clear coated though as looks like every other black car I've had in the past - plain old BLACK! Nice though.
I thought I read somewhere that clear coating is used to protect the softer finish of a metallic paint and is not necessary for plain colours. Very unsure of this although it would make sense.
Cheers

L741 is a standard 993 paint code. It's a solid Black waterbased paint.
When Porsche changed the paint code it always reflected a difference in shade. To mere mortals like ourselves we might not be able to see the difference, but there is one.
Waterbased paints were introduced in model year 1991 in order to simplify the painting process and to reduce weight.
Water based solid colours to the best of my knowledge were not given a clear coat.
UN is the interior colour code combination and has nothing to do with being clear coated.
Ciao,
Adrian.
