Post racing fuel in SF Bay Area

Hi,

Does anyone know where you can purchase high octane (100+) in the San Francisco Bay Area?

Cheers,

Boris

Boris,

Hey, how's the car running?

I hear that the Union 76 station at Almaden & Foxworthy in San Jose sells 100 octane gas.

You can even go to the Union 76 website and click on the "station locater" and search for stations carrying race gas near your home.

Talking

Newbie wants to know if 100 proof racing fuel is safe for everyday use. My 964 calls for 93 proof, and California now only sells 91.

Cool

Boris, and others,

Here in Europe we may drive our 964 on minimum 95 octane.
Most of us drive with the Superplus 98 octane [RON], which is normaly sold at every gas station.

Our cars have knock sensors, who sense any kind of engine knocking.
When you have a fuel which is to low on octane, the engine starts to knock inside [self burning/over heat]. This is bad for piston heads and so.
Your DME corrects your ignition time in such a case, and corrects this till the engine stops knocking. [sparks will come later]

On 98 or higher fuel is your chance for knocking far less. The higher your Octane number , the earlier you can have ignition/sparks without knocking.
So 100 octane is o.k. but 98 is also more then enough.
In the Sports Cars Racing Series [IMSA, ISRS] where I worked at the Kremer Porsche Team [Coulogne Germany], we used 98 octane for 650 HP and up.
But look for good fuel, some fuel is real agressive and can damage your fuel fump.

Hope this helps.

Hi Boris,

Sears Point Raceway in Marin County sells racing fuels to the public... Weekdays it's cash only - but on weekends they accept credit cards.

I believe they sell three types:

96 octane (which is probably the highest you would need)... I think it's around $3.25/gallon.

100 octane and a full race octane... <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Regards,
Brad

RON is usually 4-5 points higher than (R+M)/2.

Cool

In our visits to the US the last couple of years, I noticed that you guys have the following sorts of octane numbers.

87, wich would be in Europe 91
89, wich would be in Europe 95 {aprox.}
92, wich would be in Europe 98

The best fuel for consumers in Europe is now 98 Superplus.
Racing guys who wants high octane fuel, use 110 Octane from Elf made in France. Very expensive stuff. About 2,00 US $ per Liter [7,2 US $ a Gallon.....]

Why not all the same fuel?

Have a nice day.
