Default My poor 964 - Epoxy / Glue / Silicon Removal

The old fellow I bought my 964 from poured thousands of dollars in maintaining the mechaical integrity of the car but showed an indifference to maintaining the aesthetic virtues of the beautiful 964. The sunroof was leaking so he siliconed it shut, the plastic rocker panel covers clip broke show he glued it back smearing glue all over the rear quarter panel, the windshield leaked a bit so he siliconed that and then to add insult to injury he took a white spray can and sprayed part of the windshied and black rubber seal while he was completing his fix.

I am currently restoring the 964 during the winter months. I finished the sunroof and it now works like a charm and looks like new. I got 99% of the silicon off but there is still reminants on the sunroof seal. Any advice on getting rid of it without damaging the paint and seal? Also, what would you suggest to remove the glue or epoxy that he used to glue the rest of the car together?

I must say under, with the exception of the window trim , the paint is in exceptional condition. I used a rubbing compound to get rid of the years of grime and oxidation on the roof panel and the grand prix white now sparkles like new.... a testament to the quality factory paint. The interior is equally impressive...I wish I took before and after pictures. The interior looks like new, with no dash cracks, seat wear, tears after 264,000 miles.... hows that for quality!

I encourage my fellow 964'rs to drive their car... it can take it!!!

Can't recommend a specific product, but maybe a starting point. I've been looking for an adhesive remover to get rid of excess carpet glue. After a few weeks looking (stuff that seems readily available in the US & Canada often seems awkward to source in the UK) I spoke to a specialist adhesives firm who in addition to producing more glues than seems possible also do a range of adhesive removers. I bought a spray and a gel which have worked pretty well on the carpet and brilliantly on other stuff that I just had to test it on!

Hopefully someone will be able to name exactly what you need (I was trying to find 3M Adhesive Remover, which Jason Andreas had mentioned previously) but you could start with adhesives firms and see what they recommend to remove specific glues.
