Default 964 Oil leak

I have a '89 964 with 53,000 miles and have recently developed a small oil leak on the passenger side, just in front of the right rear wheel. I'll be crawling under the car this weekend to see where the leak is coming from and prior to doing so, I was curious if anyone has seen this before and can provide some input on correcting the problem....Thanks!

That's where your oil tank is. It could well be that it's weeping from where the oil pipe connects to the tank.

I felt a cold shiver when I noticed mine was suffering from this a couple of weeks ago!
Dreading finding out the cause and the cost, imagine my relief when I discovered it was only a corroded jubilee ( worm drive ) clip securing one of the two short hoses from the engine compartment to the oil tank in the front section of the wheelarch.
£1.59 at Halfrauds and 10 minutes later all was once more well with the world.

Also look at the hoses running in the fender well. One of them began leaking at the swaged joint on my car. The oil was dripping on the exhaust. I was worried I was in for an expensive repair. It turned out to be not that bad. The new hose was $350 and a few hours of labor.

When you look under the car, be prepared to do some cleaning. My car had oily dirt everywhere making it hard to see the source of the leak. I took some time to clean for an hour and then drove it for 30 minutes. The leak was very apparent then.

Let us know what you find.

I think it's a sign of Porsche ownership when you say $350 + a few hours labour is "not that bad"!

I tend to agree - anything that costs less than about £250 I think of as practically free these days - I'm sure I didn't think that when I bought my car though!

Ive got the same problem and it just started as well. Youre probably ahead of me in identifying the source so I would definitely be interested in hearing about the outcome!

Thanks!

It's interesting to have several beginning at about the same time period. Makes me wonder if the problem is instigated by cold weather in some way. J

Could be all of the above or Power steering pump takeoff seal and O ring.
Look under the car at the front of the engine for a round housing..looks like a short can stuck on the front of the head area with a flat cover on it. It has a small hole/notch on the bottom. If you see a drop coming out of there, it probably is the pump seals.
Brat of a job that can be done with engine in once secondary muffler is removed but much easier with partial or full engine drop.

This is a common leaky point....

You can see the drippy hose that's due for replacement on my C4...

I just replaced mine !! The upper horizontal hose was the leaker. It appeared that it was chaffed by the vertical hose. I also took the precaution and replaced the lower horizontal hose.

Cost: $11+ for the top and $18+ for the lower, plus all new clamps and 4 quarts of Mobil 1. (And 1 1/2 cans of carb cleaner spray!)

Time: 1 1/2 hours, most in cleaning the area of gunk.

Now, nice and clean and OIL FREE.

Default Fluid Leak Follow Up

Looked at my car again today and everything seems dry around the hoses in the right rear wheel well. Im becoming a little more troubled about the amount of fluid loss, especially since the car hasnt been run that much in the past three weeks. It appears it might be a little further forward of the right rear well. Also, Im not entirely sure its oil. The fluid appears more yellow in nature - brake or PS fluid?

Im a numbskull when it comes to these things and Im learning as I go. Any input would be helpful.

I had a power steering leak that was dropping quite a lot of oil on this side of the car. Needed to replace following parts.

1)964 347 451 01 - P.S Return Line - about US 55
2)964 347 445 03 - P.S Hose - about US 9

Check to see if the level in the reservoir is low & oil around the reservoir/hoses.

This is so so common....mine dumped a load of fresh mobil 1 all over the rear wheel....tests the traction control though. The world marvels at Porsche/German engineering..but would the Japanese design an oil system where a tuppeny jubilee clip exposed to the most extreme elements can fail(it simply must over time) and spray 2 gallons of oil over a rear tyre connected to 250+ horse power? Cost me pence to fix.....oh and loads of Mobil 1.
