Ok, so car was advertised at $23.5K. Didn't haggle as the seller assured me the car ran and drove great. Was in very good condition he says. Book flights from Adelaide to Sydney with my son. Plan to share the 1400km drive home.
Seller meets us at the airport. Go to car and it becomes immediately apparent the car is not in as stated condition. Again, owner assured me on the phone the car would make a great drive back to Adelaide. I pop the bonnet / hood and seller starts the car. Now I've owned a 951S and another 951, an S2 and four NA 944's and this thing is running on 3 cylinders. "Maybe fouled a plug on the drive here" he says. My son says "lets find a Supacheap (Aussie version of Pep Boys)and put some plugs in it.". Owner agrees. Plugs make no difference. Number two cylinder plug has a thick black sludge all over it. Broken rings and or a badly scored bore?
Deposit returned and we head back to the airport in an Uber to pay for flights back home.
I know people will say, "should've had a PPI before you left". but I'm one those folks that generally trusts people like this guy.

I'd also like to pint out that the owner did apologize for the way the car ran and has said he will take it to the mechanic to find out what's wrong. So kudos for this. I'd still buy the car if it was running on all four. But perhaps not for the price he's asking after now seeing the car.

Thanks for the heads up Scott. How did the body look being a UK import. Rust in any of the usual areas? Prices sure have come up when I looked last. Even nothing special 944 n/a's were $15k!

I feel your pain same thing happened to me with a guy who is a big poster on rennlist very well known. I drove 5 hours on a car that was supposed to be top notch. When I test drove it the clutch would catch and jerk he tried to explain it was normal. I have have everything from race cars, gt3 and gt4. Not only that I even coach for Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta, with all that being said it was like talking to a tree. I guess since he's been on here for so long it means he as all the knowledge in the world. It can happen to the best of us sorry to hear about your journey with that car.

Body is not as good as I thought it may be. No discernible rust but a couple of dents in bastard spots. One on the left rear corner right on the crease line, and two in the front guards right on the 'flare' arch. Has had some paint work previous and not all that good sadly. But, time and a few $$$ can fix anything right?

Lol...yes, a very expensive Kebab indeed. Could have been a lot more expensive and left a bad taste in your mouth had you handed over the money and the problem surfaced say on the Hay Plains !!!


Your story reminded me of when I bought my first 944t from you Scott. I knew a lot less about these things when I got to Adelaide and was met by your wife and kids. Holding the Bank Cheque in my hot little hand, I couldn't hand it over fast enough. My first test drive was back that 1400kms to Sydney. Loved every minute of it! Sitting on 220+kmh at 2am on 2 lane hwy wasn't the smartest thing but the car felt rock solid. Won't be doing that again anytime soon. ;-)

lol....I was taking a snooze on our last vehicle sojourn only to wake up and notice the scenery appeared to moving very quickly. Thought to myself momentarily I was just adjusting. Turned my head towards the wife and looked at the speedo. She was cracking along at 230kmh. I commented on her speed and she just nonchalantly replied. " doesn't feel like it hey". 90 928S4. Somewhere out of Deniliquin.

I use Waze but doesn't it rely on input from other drivers? ie...if nobody stops and inputs then you can still get pinged?
