S2 cams in 968 head with 968 tensioner unplugged?
Wondering if anybody has tried this out, running or just fitment-wise...
I know the differences between the S2 and 968 camshafts. The 968 cams lost a tooth on the drive sprocket but used the same cam chain as the S2. This makes the 968 sprocket smaller in diameter, which clears the Variocam tensioner, and the change in tooth counts allows for the cam advance when the Variocam solenoid activates.
I know it is possible with welding to adapt an S2 tensioner into a 968 head.
But I am wondering, in order to perhaps take advantage of the higher flow potential of the 968 head, if one could fit 944S2 camshafts into a 968 cylinder head, leaving the 968 chain tensioner left unplugged (so the solenoid would not activate and advance the intake cam). The 968 tensioner would function like it does in a 968 at idle and high RPM, merely keeping tension on the chain.

I have tested or compared it side by side but goin by memory the S2 tensioner unit is much shorter in height compared to the variocam unit. And the chain have less slack. So it would be a mismatch running the S2 cams with the same chain as 968 and the 968 tensioner.
It's easy enough to retrofit an S2 tensioner though.

The S2 cams with the larger chain sprockets won't fit next to the 968 tensioner; sprocket teeth hit the big fat tensioner. If you want to run the S2 cams, you'll have to run the S2 tensioner.
