My Audi man, tells me that for 12500 AUD, he can get you dog gears, you must ship a gearbox to him, and then he will do the rebuilt.

But why cant you use the FWD gearbox ? The quattro box is about 30 cm longer.

KRB Trading.

Many of the issues are described earlier in this thread. Size, couplings, axles, cv's. Not insurmountable. Just easier in many ways to convert what we already have but that's not cheap either.

Little bit of extra info via research. Firstly, very hard to find anyone locally who is willing to convert 968 to straight cut gears even though we have Albins, Hewland, PAR, Mondena and probably others as manufacturers of gears/boxes/lsds etcdown here. A one off production run would be very expensive. I spoke to one of the owners of an abovementioned company and I suppose like a lot of manufacturers, didn't rate highly some of his competitor's offerings. However he has made a prototype Cayman 6 speed sequential gearbox and it got me thinking that some of those Motor Werks cars (1.8lt VW motors) have a Boxter or Cayman conversion. I've sent them an inquiry about the transmission conversion but don't necessarily expect a detailed, if any reply. If it is a relatively simple bolt up affair then possibly something else to consider.

Someone told me that none of their cars actually drive. That may be a rumor, can't vouch for it.

Judging by their response about 1.8T swap parts it'll be "Send us a car and a check to do the full conversion" Since their parts are supposedly 'patent pending' even though they're a few years behind on being the first to do it. And I can't find any patent filings in their name... Very cool cars and very well built...but arrogant marketing and salesmanship.

Anyways, I digress.

recently on facebook they've shared videos of the 1.8 swapped cars out driving, including video from a camera mounted under the hood.
so they work.

Yes, I've seen that too. The car is actually pretty fast and looks quite driveable from inside. I was trying to find a link to that video but it's on their Motor Werks FB page.

How about converting an existing gearset into a dog box?

Never seen that concept of faceplating. Removes syncros but retains an angle gear?
Might have to check if they would convert a 968 box to one of these options?

patrick any reason why not trying a simple $10 flat-foot shift fuel/spark cut, before dropping $50k on a gearbox?

I talked to my Audi man yesterday, he had an 01e gearbox fwd in his shed, and he was 95% sure it was bolt on.

He even tought that the LSD from my 5 speed turbo box would fit.

Thanks for talking to him and reporting back. Unfortunately they have different sized input shafts for one thing. As discussed earlier in this thread, it would take a coupler to be made up. They're also different sized and shaped casings as far as I can tell but don't have the actual specs to hand. What would be interesting is to get the 2 gearboxes together and have an expert open them up and go through them to see what is possible. I was considering shipping one or other box to a relative expert in either Porsche or Audi field.

You can replace the clutch, i think it has the same fork.
Otherwise he belived the housing itself could be moved over to the Audi box.

I will continue the search.
