Default Hacker's Hot Knife

Necessity is the mother of invention (that and being too cheap to spend $100 on a hot knife). No more frayed ends!

Well, dammit, why didn't I think of that!

Is that techflex? I still don't like the way the ends look on that stuff even after you hot knife it.

That's an old sailboat rigger's trick, been done for decades.
Still works great too.

for years I've just used the torch/lighter on the end of the rope itself...
no frays and holds up fine.

It's McMaster-Carr nylon braided split wire loom sleeve. I always use heat shrink tube on the ends of the non-split style, but doing that seemed to defeat the purpose of the split sleeve. I did try a lighter on the frayed ends, but this created a straighter and better looking end for me. Predictably, I've since discovered the Harbor Freight sells an electric hot knife for $19.99, so I may give in and get one of those eventually, even if the heat range isn't adjustable like on mine.

Ah, didn't realize it was split-tube in the video.
