Thinking about building a 951 for chump car
How crazy am i?
Right now we're campaigning a first Gen rx7 and I'm getting tired of crappy brakes / wheel bearings / and under built rear axle. I've had a bunch of 944s over the years and I have a bunch of spare parts. I'm sure the parts cost will go up compared to rx7, but do you guys think reliability would go down? We have a lot of talent for setup in our group, and an eye for detail. Basically the 951 will have to be bone stock except for all the weight we can take out of it. No glass, and no interior. We can do brake pads and shocks but that's about it. Calculated that we would have only needed to go 4 seconds pet lap faster than our current rx7 to keep in the top 10, with the penalty laps they would have assigned us because the Porsche is slightly over value limits. The first person that says get an N/A is banned from this thread, not going to go to the effort to switch cars for an na 944. An s2 might be a better choice, but I don't want to maintain a 16 valve head, or need to find parts for it.
What say you, am I just bat **** crazy?

What's the concern with the s2 head. Just replace the chain and tensioner pad if needed then good to go. I've had no head issues over 7 years of track use.

I'd go with an 87+, hold out for ABS. Running on a flat spot gets really annoying. Late offset rotors are easier to change. Put an ABS power switch so you can power cycle it, the 944 ABS is relatively easy to confuse driving on curbs. Put in an oil temperature gauge. If you can't keep oil temperature down under 270, take the 2 lap penalty and add an aftermarket cooler. The rod bearings are the most important PM item. Lindsey's newest split crossover helps a bunch taking time out of the job. After that is probably front ball joints.

Really!? That's incredible. I can see it working in LeMons; there are plenty of cheap beat 951's out there that you could sell some things off of and get very close to $500... but that's REALLY surprising.

Chumpcar gave up on the whole '$500 car' thing. They list the cars you can bring and assign points to the car and to upgrades. Your car has to be under '500 points' to avoid penalty laps. You can freshen anything you want with new parts as long as they are not an upgrade. The purchase value is irrelevant if the car is stock.
I think it is a LOT more fun without the crazy spending and purchase price limits. I'd rather wrench at home and race at the track.
