Default 951 class 1 win PCNSW Supersprint

Yesterday , Wakefield Park Goulburn NSW Australia , PCNSW Supersprint round 2 , around 51 Porsche's competing in different classes & it looks like the number of 944 variants competing just keeps getting larger
Great weather , clear & around 21 deg cel , track was a bit slippery early on but got better during the day

Wakefield park is a relatively short twisty track & is basically corner after corner with a short front straight , but a nice track & good facilities , but being a bit short, traffic can be an issue in trying to get a good lap in , but everyone is in the same boat , so no advantage to any one competitor

Quite a few person best times were done by several competitors & notably Mark Bloxham in his Mexico Blue 1986 2.5L 951 ( restored & enhanced by Sean JET951) did a cracker of a lap and came in 4th in class 1 ( class 1 is unlimited power but on "R" spec tyres ) & Mark Bloxham came in front of a whole bunch of GT3's on Slicks & "R" spec tyres , so that was a great effort

Sean Buchanan ( JET951 ) did a personal best time & won Class 1 & came in 3rd outright , fantastic effort for a 29 year old Porsche that has no ABS ( 1986 951) & is just a commuting car to & from work with full A/C & full sound insulation, & full stereo system & electric windows etc , Sean even had his heavy steel engine lid on ( because he sold it to another customer ) so Sean's 3.0L 16V twin cam was in full weight mode

Seans 951 was the 2nd quickest Porsche there with licence plates ( road registered ) ( Perini's GT3RSR 4.0L is a race car only & can not be registered for road use )

First outright went to Richard Perini in his GT3RSR 4.0 Full track car & Richard drove very well & he did a personal best time as well

A big thank you to all the volunteers who turned up & to help in running the event

Plus a big thank you to John Vitesse ( Sean & Mark both run Vitesse systems ) , Stage 5 & Stage 3 respectively & are such good value for the money for the performance & reliability

And a big thanks to Lart for a great back up of 2nd hand 951 parts from the USA to keep these cars going

For those who are interested , Sean's 951 engine is a 16V twin cam Sean built himself , it naturally has custom pistons (Wossner ) & rods , standard 944S2 head & standard crank & standard Glyco crank bearings , she runs E85 fuel & produces around 630+HP reliable for I think 2 or 3 competition seasons , cometic head gasket ( Sean changes every year as maintenance etc ) , bid oil cooler , standard intercooler ,standard engine sump & standard oil baffles , custom crankcase ventilation system ( Sean makes this as well ) , standard 951 X under pipe & customer headers Sean fabricates from the standard 951 & 944S2 headers ( nothing special , just reliable )

The big thing to keep these engines together ( apart from maintenance ) is engine oil Viscosity & Engine Oil Film Strength , if Sean was to put this onto the track with standard road oil ( say a this century 10w-40 ) road oil with low levels of ZDDP , we would destroy no 2 conrod journal/bearing ( big end ) within a lap , so minimum viscosity for what Sean uses it for ( Supersprint & Motorkhana events ) is 25w-60 racing oil & I do mean absolute min viscosity & the oil in the sump must never exceed 115 Cel

Here is the top 12 places }

GT3RSR4.0L Racing Slicks , Class OPA
GT3 4.0L "R" Spec tyres , Class 2
951 Turbo 3.0L 16V "R" Spec Tyres , Class 1 ( Sean Buchanan JET951)
991 GT3 "R" Spec tyres , Class 1
997/2 GT3 "R" Spec Tyres , Class 1
962 Replica Racing Slicks , Class OPA
951 Turbo 2.5L "R" Spec Tyres , Class 1 ( Mark Bloxham )
993 3.8 RS Replica Racing Slicks , Class OPA
997GT3 3.8L Racing Slicks , Class OPA
996GT3 3.6L "R" Spec Tyres , Class 2
996 GT3 Racing Slicks , Class OPA
987 Cayman RS 4.0L " Racing Slicks , Class 3A

It never ceases to amaze me how these 29 year old Porsche's can mix it up with the latest & greatest road cars from Porsche & still give them a HUGE hurry up

Sean ( JET951 ) will probably add some in car footage to this thread ( I think ? )

Regards

Interesting about the oil viscosity, I'd like to know more about the oil cooler and crankcase ventilation system Sean uses too.

I think you'll regret saying that.

I think I saw the video that was added today on Youtube. The 951 seemed to be as fast as GT3s in corners and faster in the straight.

The car is definitely looking strong isn't it! Lot of motor in there. Not to mention Sean's aggressive driving. This track actually suits the GT3s more with their rear engine drive out of corners. I think Sean was actually a couple seconds quicker than those cars. The one in front is driven by a lady who seems to enjoy a reputation for taking odd lines on the track. She can produce some good times occasionally but sometimes not. These cars are also on full slicks where Sean is on Medium R spec tyres. Considering Sean's car is more of a roady than the GT3's it sure shows potential of both the driver and the 952.

Patrick you are right about that! The motor (and Sean) looks particularly strong at about the 20 second mark

Awesome driving! Was what happened at the 20 sec mark due to the down shift? Did you miss a blip? Curious what happened at the point. Awesome recovery.

Combination of things really, cold tyres, going a bit too fast through corner 2, braking while turning. Usually you get away with it when the tyres are up to temp. The best thing about the 944 is that even when you get them a little sideways, you have a lot of time to correct it and drive on.

Here is session 3. Little bit faster and a bit more aggressive.

Congrats. Very nice driving!

I can imagine what the drivers in the newer and much more expensive cars think.
