Default Spindle difference between S2 and late 951?

Hi,

I have been lucky to buy a very cheap new set of 996 Turbos discs and calipers on Ebay that I want to put on my 1991 Turbo.
To get the calipers mounted I need to reverse the hubs/spindles (english not being my native language I am in doubt which is which part :-) into the older axially mounted S2 hubs/spindles as I have original M030 Radial mounting (but with 130 mm hole distance where the 996 Turbo brakes have 142 hole distance which makes making a radial adapter impossible in my thinking).

I have searched and found threads showing a few options for adapters and I have also found a set of 944 S2 spindles and hubs that I can buy but I have been told that there are 2 types of hubs for the 944 S2 with slightly different heights on them.

Does anyone know if this is true or will I always be correct in buying the hub and spindle from an S2 as there are no height differences bwtween the model years?

I hope my asking is understandable - and to hear from some one who has been in the 944 business much longer than me :-)

Cheers

Niels

Different hubs go with different spindles. S2 and 951 both have the same spindle, either M030 or 'non' M030', but an M030 spindle need a M030 hub.

The question is... what caliper & caliper adapters do you have that you want to run? What model 911 are the brakes off of. And is the front steering knuckle on our car a M030 or not?

Brakes are 330x34 from a 996TT, calipers are 4 pistons.
My car standard has M030 brakes (304x32mm) being a Cabrio Turbo.
Steering knuckle is also M030.

I have already found an adapter from Finnish fellow rennlister Oli Snellmann friends at 9XX products

http://9xx-parts.com/store/index.php...roduct_id=1782

but just before I bought a S2 spindle/hub set I was told that maybe there was a slight height difference (a few millimeters) between S2 hubs from different years which really is bad news if correct as I then need to identify which size is correct for me (and the guy selling to me must be able to see/measure the diffference in order to identify which size he has) as I otherwise my end up buying the wrong S2 set up.

I hope this (again) rather language challenged write-up ended being understandable :-)

Thanks for any help provided :-)

M030 hubs (the rotating piece that the wheel bearings and the wheel studs attach to) are 3mm thicker at the base (nearest the car) than the standard hubs. Combined with the M030 spindle (the piece the strut, tie rod and control arm mount to) this gets the brake disc aligned with the S4 (and Big Red/Black) calipers.

If the hubs you are looking at are not from an M030 S2 then they will be 3mm 'shorter'. If I recall correctly the 996TT adapter requires the standard spindle & hub. I'd measure your current M030 hubs and then have your S2 seller measure his the same way.

Note: Your M030 hubs and spindles are worth some money, they make bolting up Big Red/Blacks a direct fitment w/o an adapter for anyone doing that conversion.

Dear Greg!

That was exactly the info I was searching :-)
Thanks a lot - I am thinking of keeping the M030 bits in order at a later stage to retrofit the parts and make the car 100% original again if that desire should occur :-)
Thanks again and have awonderful evening.

Niels, why don't you go a Big Red route, those calipers will fit directly to your spindles and also 964 turbo or 928 GTS disks will fit directly to your hubs.

Considering that Olli has been the biggest proponent of the monoblock 996 brakes (for non-M030) cars I would take his advice very seriously. For you to swap in Big Reds is simply a matter of unbolting your current calipers & discs, bolting up the Big Reds and 964/928 GTS discs and then bleeding your brakes.

To do the 996 conversion you'll have to pull the calipers/discs, pull the hub, unbolt the spindle from the strut, control arm and tie rod, swap in the new spindle, replace the hub (and wheel bearings, since you're there), install new discs, mount your adapter, mount the Big Reds, bleed the brakes and then get it aligned, not to mention buying M030 spindles & hubs.

Recent voice of experience speaking, I went from a non-M030 951 setup to an M030 setup with Big Blacks. In my case I had a bent spindle left over from a wreck and so I just went all in and did it right.

Best of luck with the swap!
