Default Quest alternator issues

I've been running a Quest alternator for several months now. Install was fairly straightforward, and I already had new wiring for the alternator harness and battery cables. The problem is that I've now gone through 2 voltage regulators. First one just stopped putting out voltage, had it replaced and the new one started over charging within a couple weeks. When I took it back to the repair shop that fixed it, they said the early failure may have something to do with the way the jumper wire was set up.. and they agreed to only warranty it this one time and no guarantees after that.

So I'm just wondering if anyone has any experience with voltage reg. failures on these units? It could be possible that the jumper wire is causing the problem, or maybe heat from the turbo. Either way I'd like to at least figure out what is causing it to eat regulators. Taking the alternator back to where I bought it is not really an option, since I had to grind down and modify the case. Btw, I have my wiring set up according to this pic:

Interesting...installed mine about 10 months ago and just lately has been getting slower to crank and start. It could be an overcharging issue killing the battery as well. I noticed my voltage gauge is always pegged at 13-14v Anybody else having these issues with the Quest alt?

BTW- i wired mine the same way

Supes6 what kind of symptoms are you having?

I have them on two cars and no issues. Can't see pics from my phone, but installed per long thread on here.

After searching around, I found that the voltage should be between 13-14v while the engines running, so it looks like mine is operating normally.
Might be time to replace my battery.

My volt gauge on the dash was bouncing around 15v... getting close to 16 with higher rpms. Checked the voltage at the battery and it was 15.3 volts at idle.

I had mine wired up as shown and never had any problems.

Karl, I would blame the jumper in that case. That's exactly what mine did when I installed it without a jumper.

My CEP kit works great and it's a shame all that machine works can't even be seen.

I just picked it up from the repair shop again. They replaced the regulator, but said that the +12v pin on the connector should be hooked up to a switched power source. Otherwise the regulator is always on. At least that's why they think it failed so quickly.

Hmm. Makes sense. But yeah, anything higher than 14V is a bit much. Although, there are 16V regulators. Fuel pumps are pretty strong there.
I will certainly change to a switched source 12V to "excite" the alternator.

Thanks for posting.

...isn't the harness to the alt. already on a switched line??

The blue wire is... but the main cable goes straight to the starter and then the battery. If you think about it, they could have just removed that extra pin if all you needed was a jumper between it and the main cable.

The factory wiring diagram has them both connected to the battery. I would check that the jumper connection is solid.
Alternator diagram on page 33 of the pdf file.

Is the Quest alternator cheaper or what is the reasoning that so many people use this?
